This knit woven heart knitting pattern is take on the classic Scandinavian woven paper heart (julehjerte) and it’s so much fun to make!

I learned several interesting things as I was designing my knit woven hearts knitting pattern. You are probably familiar with the Scandinavian woven paper hearts. They are actually Danish and are called julehjerte.
The other fascinating thing I learned is that the oldest one still in existence is from 1860. And they believe that this craft was originally created by Hans Christian Andersen. You know, the author, Hans Christian Andersen. How interesting is that?
Anyway, I was looking for something else and stumbled on a tutorial for woven paper hearts and I got to wondering if they could possibly be made with yarn. Because that’s how my brain works.
I do realize in Denmark these woven hearts a traditional Christmas craft but it’s post-holiday season here so I’m making mine for Valentine’s Day. Why not?
This design went through several strategies and iterations including considering whether I needed to actual weave the hearts or if I could fake it some way. But in the end, traditional construction won out.
These knit woven hearts are worked in linen stitch for a beautiful texture that does not curl up all. Linen stitch also has the advantage of being reasonably thin. I considered garter stitch but it’s so lofty and fluffy, I thought it would make the hearts too puffy.
The pattern does include a measurement ratio rather than absolute measurements so if you would like to substitute yarn and/or needles, you can do that your finished heart will just be a different size!
My knit woven hearts are knit flat with worsted weight yarn and when assembled, they DO open up into pockets just like the paper version. These make a really cute decoration, they would be adorable to hold a small gift or gift card, or you can add a loop and hang them like an ornament, it’s up to you?
Are you ready to knit a Danish woven heart?
