Knit up this cute baby carrot hat knitting pattern, your little baby carrot or toddler carrot will be the cutest veggie in the garden!
My kids love to listen to podcasts in the car on longer trips. They especially like the kind that explain things about the world. Recently we listened to one all about how popcorn works. It was very interesting.
There was a little bonus “fun facts about corn” segment where they talked about baby corn (which really IS baby corn cobs) which led to me explaining that baby carrots are NOT in fact baby carrots, they’re just regular carrots cut smaller.
O was flabbergasted.
I feel ya, buddy.
Anyway, the entire discussion got me thinking I should knit a baby carrot hat. In this case, it is not an adult carrot hat cut smaller. Because that would be ridiculous.
Bad jokes aside, this carrot hat turned out SO cute. I have a soft spot for my fruit and vegetable hats. The lemon hat is a long-time reader fave. And of course the apple hat has always been popular.
But there aren’t a whole lot of attractive and recognizable vegetables out there. For example, a potato hat would be very boring. So I’m really happy to finally add a carrot hat to my little garden! If you knit one, don’t forget to share it with me!

Baby Carrot Hat Instructions
(size 12 mo.)
Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles. Join to knit in the round and knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch in a rib stitch for 5 rounds. Then knit all rounds until the hat is about 5 inches long.
Decrease (divide your stitches evenly between 3 double pointed needles or use magic loop):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: knit all stitches
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: knit all stitches
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 10: knit all stitches
Round 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 12: k2tog and repeat to the end of the round
Cut yarn, thread through loops and pull to close. Weave in ends.
To make the leaves (make 3):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 5 stitches with the green yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the leaf to the stem.
Rows 1-15: knit all stitches
Row 16: ssk, k1, k2tog
Rows 17-18: knit all stitches
Row 19: k3tog
Cut yarn and pull through remaining stitch end, weave in that end.
To assemble the hat:
Using the long cast-on tail from each leaf, you will stitch the leaves to the top of the hat in a triangle formation around the center.
Stitch each leaf along its bottom edge and then stitch each leaf up the side about 1 inch to the leaf next to it so the leaves all stand up.
Attach them securely since this is an item for babies!
