Learn how to k2togtbl (knit two together through back loops), a type of decrease stitch, with this knitting video tutorial!
What is k2togtbl?
K2togtbl is a left-leaning decrease in knitting and although it is a less commonly used stitch, it’s still important to learn how to do.
It is similar to the basic k2tog stitch except that you work it through the back loops of the stitches instead of the front loops. This makes the decrease lean to the left instead of the right.
That is a definite upside to k2togtbl, it’s really easy.
The downside to k2togtbl in my opinion, is that it’s one of those knitting abbreviations that just long and scary looking. It looks intimidating and complicated when you see it, which I would guess, scares people off from using it.
But in reality, it’s a lot easier and faster than other left leaning decreases!
What is the difference between k2togtbl and ssk?
To be honest, they are VERY similar stitches. I mean, really, the average knitter wouldn’t really notice a huge difference just by looking at them. The difference is that k2togtbl produces a twisted stitch while ssk does not.
Sometimes you might do this or a designer might specify k2togtbl because it’s an easier stitch and other times, the twisted stitch produced by k2togbl might be used decoratively to add some texture. It is, however, a pretty subtle texture.
But, surprisingly, while researching this post, I discovered there is a significant group of knitters out there who use k2togtbl instead of ssk ALL THE TIME because it’s much faster to knit!
I was delighted to discover this because it kind of reminds me of having your own personal handwriting style. You know I’m not one for the “rules” of knitting being too stuffy so I think it’s amazing that people personalize their work like this.
Of course, if you’re following one of MY patterns, you should always follow it EXACTLY as written. *sarcasm
