To make the Hair:
To knit the hair you will need to know how to knit a loop stitch (knit loop), here’s how I do it:
Knit one stitch into the stitch on the left needle but leave that stitch on the needle. Bring the yarn from the back to the front between the needles, wrap it around your left thumb and bring it back to the back of your work between the needles again. Then, keeping the loop on your thumb, knit a second stitch into that original stitch that’s still on your left needle. Drop that stitch off the left needle. Then slip the first stitch over the second and off the right needle (you can either do this using the left needle or your fingers), watch a video of this stitch here:
To knit the hair, cast on 7 stitches with medium brown yarn onto straight needles.
Row 1: k1, knit 5 loops, k1
Row 2: kfb, k5, kfb
Row 3: k1, knit 7 loops, k1
Row 4: kfb, k7, kfb
Row 5: k1, knit 9 loops, k1
Row 6: knit all stitches
Row 7: k1, knit 9 loops, k1
Row 8: k2tog, k9, k2tog
Row 9: k1, knit 7 loops, k1
Bind off and weave in the ends.
Nose:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 8 stitches with the brown yarn, leave a long cast on tail.
Row 1: knit all stitches
Row 2: p2tog, p4, p2tog
Row 3: k2tog, k2, ssk
Row 4: p2tog twice
Row 5: k2tog
Cut yarn and pull through loop to close, weave in this end.
To assemble the hat, use a long length of yarn to stitch the hair to the top center of the hat.
To make the ears, lay one light tan inner ear, wrong (purl) sides together on top of one medium tan outer ear, use the long cast on tail of the inner ear to stitch them together. Be sure your stitches only catch purl loops on the outer ear and do not show through to the back of the ear. Then pinch the ear at the base and use the medium tan cast on tail to put one stitch through the bottom to help it hold its shape.
Finally, still using that same cast on tail, stitch each ear securely to the hat on either side of the hair.
To make the face, thread the cast on tail from the nose on your yarn needle and use it to stitch the nose to the front of the hat. Then thread a length of brown yarn on your yarn needle and carefully stitch two slightly slanted horizontal stitches for the eyes and three stitches in a ‘T’ shape below the nose for the mouth. Make sure that these stitches are fairly loose so they don’t pull when the hat stretches!
And that’s it! Your adorable alpaca hat is finished!
