This cute redbreast robin hat knitting pattern is a wonderful spring knitting pattern to make for your newborn, baby or toddler!
This adorable robin hat knitting pattern is one of my new faves, I mean, who doesn’t need a cute little baby bird hat? No one, that’s the answer! Everyone needs one! Although Baby V would like you to know that she is not planning to have worms for breakfast. Nope. Just in case anyone was confused by these pictures. Oh gosh, aren’t kids the best sometimes?
Anyway, this little robin has is a pretty easy knit so if you’re new to knitting baby animal hats with me, this is a reasonable easy one to start with. I did include instructions to make that cute red breast different sizes depending on which size you knit so that should help too. This pattern is especially easy because there are no ears and I know that attaching those can sometimes be difficult to newbies. (Though if you want to try one with ears, I do have a video showing how to do it!)
And hey, I went with cute, smiley upside curve eyes, but if you want your robin to have a different expression, the beauty of a pattern like this is that you can do that part however you want! There are no knitting police here, I promise. That’s how I get away with knitting ridiculous things in weird ways. It’s fun!
Are you ready to get started knitting your own baby robin hat? Let’s go!

Red breast:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast
on 16 stitches with red yarn. Leave a long cast on tail to stitch the red breast to the hat.
Rows 1-5: purl all odd rows (WS) and knit all even rows (RS)
Row 6: ssk, k12, k2tog (14 stitches)
Row 7: purl all stitches
Row 8: ssk, k10, k2tog (12 stitches)

Beak:
Using double pointed needles as straight
needles, cast on 6 stitches with yellow yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the beak to the hat.
Row 1: knit all stitches
Row 2: ssk, k2, k2tog (4 stitches)
Row 3: knit all stitches
Row 4: ssk, k2tog (2 stitches)
Row 5: k2tog
Cut yarn and pull through last stitch to close. Weave in that end.
Wings (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight
needles, cast on 10 stitches with light blue yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the wing to the hat.
Row 1: kfb, k7, k2tog
Row 2: knit all stitches
Row 3: kfb, k7, k2tog
Rows 4-8: knit all stitches
Row 9: ssk, k6, k2tog (8 stitches)
Row 10: knit all stitches
Row 11: ssk, k4, k2tog (6 stitches)
Bind off and weave in that end. Flip one wing over so they are mirror images. Then thread one long cast on tail from one wing on your yarn needle and use it to stitch that wing to one side of the hat. Repeat with other wing.
To finish the hat:
Thread the long cast on tail from the red breast onto your yarn needle and use it to stitch the red breast to the front of the hat just above the brim as shown.
Then thread the long cast on tail on your yarn needle and sew the beak to the front of the hat along its top edge.
Finally, thread dark chocolate brown yarn on your yarn needle. Stitch one loose stitch for the eye in an upside down U shape. Make a second tiny stitch right in the middle of the curve to help the eye keep its shape. Repeat with the other eye and weave in ends inside the hat.
Happy Knitting!
