But I’m so happy with the way the seed stitch eyes came out and the cute little ears on top. Adorable! Sleepy Owl Hat Knitting Pattern
(12 mo. size, see PDF for additional sizes)
Gauge: 20 st. = 4 inches
Worsted weight yarn in tan, rust orange and brown
US 7 16″ circular knitting needles

Sleepy Owl Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions
**this pattern has been updated on 8/27/17
Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles with the brown yarn color. Join to knit in the round and k1, p1 in rib stitch for 4 rounds, then knit all rounds until the hat is about 5 inches long.
Decrease (divide the stitches between 3 double pointed needles and knit with the 4th):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: Knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: Knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: Knit all stitches to the end of the round.
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 10: Knit all stitches
Round 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 12: Knit all stitches
Round 13: k2tog repeat to the end of the round
Cut yarn, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.
Ears (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 6 stitches using the brown yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the ears to the hat.
Rows 1-2: knit all stitches
Row 3: k2tog, k2, ssk
Row 4: knit all stitches
Row 5: k2tog, ssk
Row 6: k2tog
Cut yarn and pull through loop, weave in that end.
Beak:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 6 stitches
using the orange yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the beak to the
hat.
Rows 1-2: knit all stitches
Row 3: k2tog, k2, ssk
Rows 4-5: knit all stitches
Row 6: k2tog, ssk
Row 7: knit all stitches
Row 8: k2tog
Cut yarn and pull through loop, weave in that end.
Face:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 8 stitches using the tan yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the face to the hat.
Row 1: kfb, kfb, k1, p1, k1, p1, kfb, kfb
Row 2: (p1, k1) repeat to the end of the row
Row 3: kfb, (p1, k1) 5 times, kfb
Row 4: (k1, p1) repeat to the end of the row
Row 5: kfb, (k1, p1) 6 times, kfb
Row 6: (p1, k1) repeat to the end of the row
Row 7: (k1, p1) repeat to the end of the row
Rows 8-14: repeat rows 6 & 7, ending with a row 6
Row 15: k2tog, (k1, p1) 6 times, ssk
Row 16: (k1, p1) repeat to the end of the row
Row 17: k2tog, (p1, k1) 5 times, ssk
Row 18: (p1, k1) repeat to the end of the row
Row 19: k2tog, k2tog, k1, p1, k1, p1, ssk, ssk
Row 20: (p1, k1) repeat to the end of the row
Repeat rows 1-19.
Bind off and weave in that end.
To assemble the hat:
Using its long cast on tail, stitch the face to the front of the hat Then using its long cast on tail, stitch the beak to the hat at the bottom of the face Then use each long cast on tail to stitch the ears to the top of the hat.
To make the face:
Thread your yarn needle with a DOUBLED length of brown yarn. Use to stitch two long horizontal stitches for the eyes. They should be loose enough to curve downward in a ‘U’ shape Secure the shape with one tiny stitch in the middle
