Discover low mess craft supplies to do low mess crafts with kids! These supplies will save you from cleanup!
If you’re wondering why low mess crafts with kids is on my mind, I recently went away for night. While I was gone, my youngest, who LOVES to craft, found some glitter. Now, honestly, this one’s a really tidy kid. generally speaking. But I’m not sure exactly what happened, but they used the glitter unsupervised. I think you know where I’m going with this…
Long story short, it’s three weeks later and I’m still finding bits of glitter. In every room of the house on every level. I know you’ve all been there too, right? There are certainly worse messy craft supplies than glitter too. But as someone who frequently shops for craft supplies, I figured it was about time that I shared some of my recent low mess craft supply finds with you.
Craft supplies have really come a long way since we were kids and I’m pretty impressed with some of the things that exist now that didn’t when I was a kid. And let me preface this by saying, that I truly understand that kids experimenting with art supplies and making messes is part of the artistic process. It’s important for the them to experience all of their senses when they’re making art.
BUT ALSO, there are times when you can’t handle/don’t want a mess. There are also kids who don’t like messes (I had one of those, finger paint was NOT enjoyable for them). So it’s wonderful that there are options. These low mess craft supplies are also fantastic to take places like if you’re going on a trip or you have to spend a long time waiting somewhere.
So let’s get to it and I’ll share my favorite low mess craft supplies for kids!
Low Mess Craft Supplies for Kids!

Kwik Stix Tempera Paint
These tempera paint sticks were our first low mess craft supply discovery and we are obsessed. They work on paper or cardboard or anything really, we've even used them to decorate pumpkins. They truly are mess free, but the colors apply really easily and are nice and bright. And, unlike jars of paint, they really don't dry out. These are a total win.
Oil Pastel Twisty Stix
My youngest REALLY wanted to use their older siblings oil pastels and for a long time we said no because oil pastels are kind of messy and they really aren't washable. And then I found these oil pastel twist up sticks and now they are SO happy. All the joy of super pigmented beautiful oil pastels, none of the messy fingers!
Glitter Glue
Whoever invented glitter glue is a genius. Since you need glue to make glitter stick anyway, why not mix them ahead of time and totally eliminate the glittery mess??
Stamper Markers
If you have a kid who likes stamping but always ends up with ink pad ink all over their fingers, these stamping markers are the solution! Each marker has a different stamp shape and they re-ink themselves. Plus washable!
Washable Dot Markers
Dot markers are super fun for younger kids, all the thrill of using markers, with a lot less mess!
Acrylic Paint Pens
Acrylic paint pens are great for older kids. While not technically washable, they're perfect for craft projects like rock painting or painting wood or paper mache blanks. Really easy to get lots of detail and so much less mess.
Squeezable Brush Paints
These paint pens hold tempera paint inside (and you can refill them) they're a great way to keep the paint mess contained.
Watercolor Pencils
Even grownups love watercolor pencils. Draw with these bright colorful colored pencils, then add plain water on top with a brush to make them magically turn into watercolors. So much easier.
Water Wow!
We have had water wows in our car, bag and stashed around the house for going on 10 years now. Kids of all ages enjoy them and it's kind of magical how you can "paint" the pictures over and over.
Color Wonder
The Color Wonder products are another fun way to paint or use markers with no mess since their supplies only work on the special color wonder paper. This is a perfect low mess craft supply to take places.
There are also some craft supplies for kids that are naturally low mess, don’t forget those!
