Learn how to skp (slip 1, knit1, pass slipped stitch over) in this easy video tutorial!
When I first learned to knit, the internet wasn’t really very much of a thing. And that meant that you got knitting patterns out of a book, magazine, or pamphlet and you HAD to have a knitting reference book of some kind because if you ran across a stitch that you didn’t know how to do, there was no where else to look it up!
I remember running over to the library down the block from my apartment in college to borrow a knitting reference book when this happened to me. It was probably a stitch like skp, where the name doesn’t really tell you what to do and I was totally confused.
If you’re here, then you’re probably also confused by a stitch definition, but aren’t you SO glad the internet exists now and you can look up “skp” on the tiny computer you carry in your pocket all day? The future is amazing! (I’m still waiting for my robot maid and flying car though…)
Anyway, skp (aka slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) is a left leaning single decrease that results in a stitch much like ssk. It is often used as a mirror stitch to k2tog.
Skp is sometimes also written “sl1, k1, psso“.
What is the difference between skp and ssk?
Honestly, 99% of people won’t be able to tell the difference between the finished stitches. If a designer specifies one over the other, then my general rule of thumb is use what a designer specifies. But otherwise, you can use whichever left leaning single decrease technique feels easier and more comfortable to you.
For a lot of people their ssk stitches turn out a bit neater than skp, but hey, if that’s not you, then go with skp!
How do you knit an skp stitch?
- Start with your yarn behind your work
- Slip the first stitch from the left knitting needle to the right, knitwise
- Then knit the second stitch on the left needle as usual
- Use the tip of the left needle (or your fingers) to lift the slipped stitch up and over the knit stitch and off the right knitting needle
- The skp decrease is a left-leaning single decrease stitch
