Learn how to knit two stitches together (k2tog) with this knitting video and step by step photo tutorial!
Once you’ve mastered knit and purl stitches, it’s time to start learning how to increase and decrease stitches in your knitting projects. Last week we talked about increasing with yarn overs, this week we’re talking about k2tog (knit two together)!
You usually add or subtract stitches to change the shape of your project but sometimes these stitches are also used as part of decorative motifs!
Either way, decreases are important to learn. I personally think k2tog (knit two together) is the easiest knitting decrease there is.
If you can do a knit stitch, then you can do a k2tog. And the other thing I love about k2tog is that the name sounds just like what it is. Do you know what I mean? There are some more obscure knitting stitches out there where the name does not give much of a clue of how to actually DO a stitch.
But with knit two together, you literally just knit two stitches together. So of course, that’s why we’re starting with k2tog, it’s perfect for beginners. Here’s how to do it…
How to k2tog (knit two together)
- To k2tog (knit two together) start with the yarn behind your work
- Insert the right knitting needle through the first TWO stitches on the left knitting needle from left to right
- Wrap the yarn around the tip of the right needle
- Pull the yarn through both stitches
- Drop the 2 original stitches from the left knitting needle
- The k2tog is a right-leaning decrease stitch
Don’t forget to watch the k2tog video in this post to see how to knit two stitches together in action!
