Stockinette stitch is a classic for a reason, the right side of stockinette, the classic columns of v-shapes that we all think of when we think of knitting is pretty, it’s neat, it’s tidy, it’s the best. But ask any knitter and they’ll tell you, stockinette can be infuriating because it curls up and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Enter double stockinette stitch! Today we’re going to learn how to knit double stockinette stitch, it’s much much easier than you think and you’ll love it!
What is double stockinette stitch?
Double stockinette is a double thickness knit fabric that has knit stitches (stockinette) on BOTH sides. This is achieved by essentially only knitting half of the stitches on each side of the fabric on each row. Double stockinette lays flat and is reversible!
Why should I learn how to knit double stockinette stitch?
- It’s incredibly easy, and there is NO purling when knit flat.
- Double stockinette stitch lays flat without blocking which makes it great for flat knitting projects like scarves.
- Double stockinette stitch is completely reversible.
- Double stockinette stitch is extra thick and warm.

Tips & Tricks for knitting double stockinette stitch
- Double stockinette stitch is easiest and most effective knit flat.
- Because it’s reversible, it may help to place a marker on the right side of your knitting to help you remember which is which.
- When you are counting rows for double stockinette stitch, remember that each knit stitch actually represents two rows.
- When you are counting stitches for double stockinette stitch, remember that between each visible knit stitch is a slipped stitch that is only visible on the other side.
- Double stockinette can be difficult to deal with if stitches come off the needle or if you have to frog so take extra care!
- When measuring gauge, remember that the gauge of stockinette will not be the same as regular stockinette stitch.

Notes:
sl1 = slip one stitch purlwise
wyif = with working yarn in front
wyib = with working yarn in back
Cast on an odd number of stitches
Row 1: (k1, sl1 wyif) repeat to the last stitch, k1
Row 2: (sl1wyif, k1) repeat to the last stitch, sl1wyif
Repeat rows 1&2.

Double Stockinette Stitch Knitting Pattern (in the round)
Double stockinette is not usually knit in the round. It’s not as easy and it just isn’t something you will probably see very often. That being said, I’m including instructions for double stockinette in the round because that’s information that I would want to have if I was looking it up. So here you go!
Notes:
sl1 = slip one stitch purlwise
wyif = with working yarn in front
wyib = with working yarn in back
Cast on even number of stitches and join to knit in the round.
Round 1: (k1, sl1wyif) repeat to the end of the round.
Round 2: (sl1 wyib, p1) repeat to the end of the round.
Repeat rounds 1 & 2.

- Row 1: (k1, sl1 wyif) repeat to the last stitch, k1
- Row 2: (sl1wyif, k1) repeat to the last stitch, sl1wyif
- Repeat rows 1&2.
Double Stockinette Stitch Knitting Pattern (in the round)
- Cast on even number of stitches and join to knit in the round.
- Round 1: (k1, sl1wyif) repeat to the end of the round.
- Round 2: (sl1 wyib, p1) repeat to the end of the round.
