Learn how to increase with a purl front back (pfb) stitch with this knitting step by step photo and video tutorial!
Today we’re talking about pfb (purl front back) a simple increase for the purl side of your next knitting project.
Pfb is the ideological opposite of kfb (it’s not the exact opposite though) and it increases one purl stitch into two purl stitches. It’s also totally easy, I promise.
I like this one because it really blends in and looks nice even in the middle of the row unlike some other increases (I’m looking at you, kfb!)
It takes a little practice but once you do it once or twice, you should be all set! This another stitch where the name really describes what you’re doing well. Basically you’re purling into one single stitch twice, once through the front leg of the stitch and a second time through the back leg.
Don’t worry, the pictures and videos in the post will show you exactly what to do!
How to pfb (purl front back)
- To do a pfb stitch, start with the yarn in front of your work
- Insert the right knitting needle through the front of first stitch on the left needle from right to left, wrap yarn around the right needle and pull the yarn through to purl one stitch, but DO NOT drop the original stitch from the left needle
- Now bring the right needle behind and insert it through the BACK of the same stitch on the left needle from right to left
- Wrap the yarn around the tip of the right needle and pull the yarn through.
- Finally, drop the original stitch from the left knitting needle
