Learn how to start your knitting project with a Cable Cast On with this video and photo tutorial!
Cable Cast on is a very similar technique to a knitted cast on which makes it another one that’s good for beginning knitters.
The difference, besides where you put the right needle, is that cable cast on produces a smoother looking, more firm cast on, it’s a nice even edge with a lot of integrity and it shouldn’t stretch out too much.
But like I said, it’s SO similar to knitted cast on that if you can do a knitted cast on, you can do a cable cast on, you just insert the needle in a slightly different place for each stitch you add.
You may find that you learn one cast on and start to think, “it’s fine, I don’t really see the point of learning more.” But someday you’ll come across a pattern that uses a different type of cast on and you’ll be glad you know how to do it!
You might be tempted to change cast-ons from whatever the pattern says, but many times designers have chosen a particular type of cast on for a reason. And if you change it, your project may not turn out exactly like the example. So you should learn all the different techniques and stick with what the pattern says to do.
It’s like when you substitute ingredients on a recipe, it won’t turn out like the example if you don’t follow the instructions!
That being said, let’s get to it! Here’s how to knit a cable cast on!
Cable Cast On Instructions
- Start the cable cast on with a slip knot on your left needle.
- Add one additional stitch with a knitted cast on (i.e. knit one stitch normally but then transfer it from the right needle back to the left) so that you have two stitches on the left needle.
- Insert the right needle BETWEEN the first two stitches on the left needle.
- Wrap the working yarn around the right needle.
- Pull the working yarn through between the two stitches.
- Transfer this new stitch from the right needle to the left needle.
- You have cast on one stitch with a cable cast on.
- Repeat steps 3 – 6!
