Learn how to start your knitting project with a knitted cast on!
Knitted Cast on is a great cast on for beginning knitters. Often when someone learns to knit, the teacher casts on for the first time and then starts off by teaching the basic knit stitch and purl stitch. Raise your hand if that’s the way you learned! Raise your hand again if it was a scarf! Ha!
I think knitting tends to be taught this way because casting on can be done in lots of different ways and because it can sometimes be quite complicated. So it makes sense to start with the most basic building block of knitting, the knit stitch, and put off teaching cast ons until later. We want to get a new knitter right to the good stuff. It also helps them not get overwhelmed with a technique that you don’t have to do all that often.
Luckily, once you know how to do a basic knit stitch, then you can definitely do a knitted cast on! I promise it’s SO easy. (Make sure to start with my tutorial on making a slip knot since that is always the first step to any knitting project!)
Knitted cast ons can also be used to add more stitches to a knitting project. You might do this when making buttonholes, for example. But if you’re just starting out, don’t worry about that yet! Just know knitted cast on is sturdy and super easy to learn! Don’t forget to watch the video to see me do a knitted cast on in action!
