This adorable squishy lace grid hat knitting pattern knits up super fast in worsted weight yarn for your baby or toddler!
When I first started knitting I wasn’t a big fan of garter stitch. I fell in love with the neat v’s of stockinette and I didn’t think anything else could compare. It’s smooth, it’s perfect, it’s the hallmark of all knitting. I thought it was perfect.
But now that I’ve knit up this Lace Grid Hat, I’m jumping on the garter bandwagon. Stockinette may be smooth, but it can’t compare to the squishiness of garter stitch texture. Other pros of garter include being reversible, being easy, and not curling. I don’t know why it took me so long to love it.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not replacing stockinette as my favorite, it’s more like my heart just got bigger. It’s like when have more than one child, or make a new friend. You might think your life is full, but there’s always room for more love, right?
The Lace Grid hat is an incredibly easy knit. I much prefer to knit hats in the round because it’s a lot faster and easier, but please be aware, garter stitch in the round is different! To get garter stitch with regular flat knitting you only use knit stitches. That’s it. And it magically looks the same on both sides.
To get a garter stitch texture in the round, you have to alternate knit and purl rounds. It’s the opposite of normal because you never flip your knitting around to the other side in the round.
Stockinette is the opposite, alternating knit and purl sides when knit flat but all knit stitches in the round. If you follow the pattern, you’ll be fine, just don’t overthink it and confuse yourself.
Also, if the word “lace” in the name Lace Grid Hat knitting pattern scares you, this is pretty much the world’s easiest possible lace. It’s only two stitches. That’s it. You can absolutely do it!
The Lace Grid hat makes a great transitional knit for when you need a little warmth in spring or fall but don’t want to be too warm. If you knit one, I’d love it if you’d share it with me and link your project on Ravelry!
