Find some new favorites and take your craft projects to the next level with this big list of unusual craft tools & supplies!
As you may know, I’m a long time craft addict. I’ve been crafting since I was a kid and also went to design school for architecture. So making stuff is pretty much my life. Over time, I’ve become really interested in the history of crafts and art. Especially the supplies and tools that makers use and used in the past. I get really excited to look through old craft tools & supplies in stores or at garage sales. You never really know what you’re going to find!
I also belong to an online group for DIY enthusiasts and some of my favorite posts there (AND my favorite segment on This Old House) are “what is it?” questions where someone posts something they don’t know the purpose of. Usually the purpose of said item isn’t clear from its appearance which makes for some fun mysteries. And almost always there is someone else who DOES know what it is. And no, these aren’t always defunct useless objects, they can just be unusual craft tools & supplies.
I have learned so much from these posts and segments. Do I always remember it all? No. But I still find them endlessly fascinating. Even though I pretty much never ever know that the thing is at the start. It’s kind of amazing the things that people have invented that are so cool and yet, we don’t even know they exist!
So today, we’re going to talk about unusual craft tools and supplies. And we are doing this for no other reason than it’s fun and interesting. And hey, maybe you’ll find an unusual craft tool you need but didn’t even know existed! So let’s get started!
Unusual Craft Tools & Supplies

Needle Threaders
If you sew a lot, you probably know about these handy tools that help you thread a needle, but if you're just starting, you might not!
Flexible Curve with Inking Edge
This flexible curve is basically like a flexible ruler. You can bend it into any curvy shape and then trace along the edge to draw nicely curved lines! Definitely own one of these and have no idea where it came from!
Equidistant Measuring Marking Tool
This super cool folding tool expands or contracts to help you make evenly spaced marks across a distance. Super helpful for wood working or crafting or even spacing buttons or buttonholes!
Bone Folder
Martha Stewart taught me about bone folders on tv a million years ago. You use them to run along the crease of folded paper to make the edge super sharp, they're very handy for paper crafts and origami!
Masking Fluid
Do you remember when you were a kid and you'd draw on paper with a white crayon and then put watercolor paint on top and the paint wouldn't stick to the crayon parts? Masking fluid is like that, but for grownups. Paint on masking fluid, let it dry then paint over it. The cool thing about masking fluid is that, sort of like rubber cement, you can remove it from the artwork when the paint is dry!
Metal Yarn Guide
This is a knitting thimble that you wear while knitting or crocheting and it helps you keep your yarn at the correct tension, so cool!
Professional Drafting Dry Cleaning Pad
We used these drafting pads in architecture school, it's basically a cloth bag filled with eraser dust and you gently rub them on a drawing to remove smudges. Who knew?
Sand Eraser
It's an eraser with bits of sand for HEAVY DUTY erasing. This thing says it can even erase pen and marker!
Row Counter Ring
I got a row counting ring last year and I'm in love with it. I wear mine on my left thumb when I'm knitting and you simply turn the little numbered dials to keep track of how many rows or rounds you've worked. So handy (ha, get it?)!
Adhesive Remover, Rubber Cement Pik-Up
So honestly, you might think this white rubbery square is ridiculous, but you use it rub over rubber cement or masking fluid (that we talked about above) and it picks it all right up. Much better than trying to get it all off with your fingers!
Hot Glue Gun Finger Protectors
Hot glue gun finger protectors...what haven't they thought of yet??
Tshirt Alignment Tool
You line these sized rulers up with the neckline of a tshirt to center and align designs on them. And here I am eyeballing my tshirt designs like a chump, I didn't know these existed until recently!
Sanding Twigs
I've always just used an nail file or emory board to sand tiny areas but apparently sanding twigs are a thing! The different colors are each a different grit sandpaper. These would be must-haves if you do woodworking!
Sili Glue Pod and 3 Sili Micro Glue Brushes
Ok...wait, they make tiny silicone brushes for applying glue that are easy to clean?! I don't have to apply glue with a toothpick or q-tip anymore??? Definitely need this!
