Here we are, with the basic rolled brim baby hat knitting pattern, already at week 2 of my Back to Basics series! I looove this hat because you honestly only need to know how to do one kind of stitch, the knit stitch, to make this hat. Not a single purl anywhere! It’s such a great hat for beginners, in fact, I’m pretty sure a rolled brim baby hat was the first kind of baby hat I ever knit.
This is also a good choice for those of you who have trouble with their ribbing stretching out or not looking neat. This cute rolled brim literally makes itself. And it’s the one time where the fact that stockinette stitch curls up isn’t annoying. Let’s embrace that curl and use it for cuteness!
I knit this easy baby hat up in a gorgeous blue/green variegated worsted weight yarn and it sure is pretty! This hat is knit in the round, but don’t worry, knitting in the round is so much easier than you think it is, I promise. It’s like buttonholes in sewing. For the longest time I was sooo scared to try a buttonhole. And then when I finally did it, it was so much easier than I thought it was going to be. Same with knitting in the round. Give it a try, you’ll love it I promise!
This easy baby hat would also look really adorable with a pom pom on top. That’s the best thing about these basic baby hat knitting patterns, there are so many ways you can customize them. You can even knit this rolled brim baby hat in stripes!

Basic Rolled Brim Baby Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions

Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles. Join to knit in the round and then knit all rounds. As you knit, the brim of the hat will start to roll up on its own. Keep knitting until the hat, including the rolled brim, is about 5 inches long.
Decrease (divide the stitches between 3 double pointed needles and knit with the 4th):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: Knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: Knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: Knit all stitches to the end of the round.
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 10: Knit all stitches
Round 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 12: k2tog repeat to the end of the round
Cut yarn, thread on yarn needle, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.

When you say “5 inches long, including the rolled brim” does that mean to keep the brim rolled when you measure or to unroll it to measure?
