This adorable knit hat has a cozy folded brim and two cute bouncy hearts on top, it’s the perfect fun Valentine’s Day knitting pattern for your baby or toddler!
So listen, I am fully aware that this Double Heart Pom Hat knitting pattern is kind of silly. But that’s kind of the deal around here, we’re aiming for joyful, fun, colorful and a side of silly. And I think this cute hat with its two bouncy bright hearts on top, totally fits the bill.
I used to be the kind of person that saved up fancy stationary or stickers or didn’t wear my favorite clothes because I was waiting for a special occasion. But as happens to many people at some point, things happened in life that made me want to seize the day. We have to grab joy where we can.
In fact, that’s one of my favorite things about kids. They inherently understand this idea and will usually choose the most fun, colorful option out there. I think this is why this cute Valentine’s Day baby hat is currently Baby V’s favorite. The folded brim is nice and soft and warm and the hearts on top are just FUN. All capital letters F-U-N.
And let met tell you, it’s super adorable to see the hearts bouncing around when she runs in all of her winter gear. There are few things better than seeing little kids running in snowpants.
Well, before this post just turns into me ranting about things that bring me joy, we should talk about this pattern. I love this type of hat because there’s no decrease, which means, NO double pointed knitting needles. I know a lot of you love that!
The other great thing is that a couple years ago I designed a way to knit heart shapes without any fiddly short rows or weird joins and I’ve been knitting them that way ever since. Let me tell you, knitting a heart shape all in one piece is truly magical. So you can learn how to do that with this pattern too! It’s a win all around! Should we get started? Do you want to knit one with me?

Double Heart Pom Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions (size 0-3 months, see pdf version for additional sizes)
Instructions:
With a long tail cast on, cast on 56 stitches onto your 16” circular knitting needles and join to knit in the round.
(k1,p1) and repeat in a rib stitch for 1.5 inches. This will be your folded brim. Then knit all stitches until the hat is 6 inches long with the brim folded up.
Finish the hat with a three needle bind off.
To knit the Hearts (make 4):
(sl1: slip one stitch purlwise)
Cast 9 stitches onto your knitting needles (you can use DPN’s as straight needles here)
Row 1 (WS): pfb, p3, sl1, p3, pfb (11 stitches)
Row 2 (RS): kfb, k4, sl1, k4, kfb (13 stitches)
Row 3: pfb, p5, sl1, p5, pfb (15 stitches)
Row 4: k7, sl1, k7
Row 5: p7, sl1, p7
Rows 6-7: repeat rows 4 & 5
Row 8: ssk, k5, sl1, k5, k2tog (13 stitches)
Row 9: p6, sl1, p6
Row 10: ssk, knit across until there are 2 stitches left, k2tog
Row 11: purl all stitches
Repeat rows 10 & 11 until you have 3 stitches left after a right side row. Then p3tog.
Cut yarn and pull through remaining stitch to finish. Weave in the ends. Block your heart shapes for best results.
To assemble the hat:
Lay the hat out flat. Place one heart wrong side up under one of the top corners.
Then lay another heart wrong side down on top, sandwiching the corner of the hat between two hearts. Pin them together. Then thread a length of pink yarn on your yarn needle and use it to neatly sew the hearts together keeping the top corner of the hat
sandwiched between them. Repeat with two more hearts and the other top corner of the hat.
Happy Knitting!
