This adorable Valentine’s Day Heart Stocking Cap knitting has interlocking hearts around the brim and polka dots above! It’s the perfect knit for your little love!
I have to admit, I’ve been on a stocking cap streak lately. My Valentine’s Day Heart stocking cap is the latest. I’m not sure why, except that I realized there’s a lot more vertical real estate to design with and so you can do some fun things with a taller hat! Also they look so darn cute bouncing around on tiny children.
Ok, that’s the real reason. I answered my own question. Like my bonnet phase, it always comes down to the cuteness factor!
I knit this cute hat in the round which always the easiest way to knit fair isle or stranded colorwork. I also discovered that when it comes to top of a stocking cap, I have some alternative ideas for double pointed needles which are not only just a pain to juggle normally, but are even more of a pain for fair isle.
The first option is to learn the magic loop method of knitting in which you use a long circular knitting needle (like 40″) and pull loose cable on both sides to allow you to knit a small number of stitches on only the two needles. It’s a little confusing when you first start, but once you pick it up, it’s 100% worth it.
The other option that may feel a little more familiar is to try flexi needles. I have flexi flips but that’s just what I saw at the store and bought for myself. I’m sure there are others. Flexi needles are almost like super SHORT cable needles. There are two short needles connected by a short cable that ends up working kind of like flexible double pointed knitting needle. Because they are flexible you can put your stitches on only two and knit with the third rather than three or four DPN’s.
Once I tried flexi flips I started using them almost every time. Anyway, the point of this is that because a stocking cap has a lot more small diameter rounds than a regular hat, it’s helpful to have an alternative to double pointed knitting needles to make that section easier. If you give one of these a try, I’d love to hear what you think!
