This cute buffalo plaid Santa hat knitting pattern is a fun cozy twist on a traditional Christmas knitting pattern for your baby or toddler!
Christmas knitting is my favorite. There’s something about a baby in a cute Christmas hat that is just the best. I’ve already knit a cute little baby Santa hat and a Santa Pixie bonnet. This year, I thought a fun cozy twist on the classic Santa hat would be a Buffalo Plaid Santa Hat knitting pattern.
This adorable hat is just like a classic Santa hat but in red and black plaid. The colorwork makes this hat nice and thick and cozy and warm. Plus it has a super soft squishy chenille rolled brim. This one is definitely comfy! Maybe we won’t be having holiday parties this year, but this would be cute to wear outside all season!
I think buffalo plaid is definitely having a moment. It’s wintery, it’s cozy, it’s hygge. (Hygge is my favorite current trend, it’s not often comfort is trendy!) I hope buffalo plaid sticks around for a while, it’s a classic pattern and I’m into it!
This adorable hat is knit in the round with just 2 colors of yarn. I used red and black, but you could knit this in white and black or green and white or any other color combo. The instructions are charted and super easy to understand. If you’re new to stranded knitting, this is an easy to memorize pattern that is good practice!
I also recommend Bernat Pipsqueak for the fluffy brim, but you can use another chenille yarn if you have it. Here are some substitution suggestions. If you prefer to knit the rolled brim in regular worsted yarn then don’t size down to US 6 needles, just knit the entire thing with US 7’s.
I kind of want to put my little one in an entirely buffalo plaid Santa suit. Would that be overkill? I’m going with no.
