This pretty wintry fair isle stocking cap knitting pattern has a fun fair isle pattern of trees and fair isle motifs in red and white worsted, it’s a fun knit to make for your little one!
I have two questions. Number one, how have I not designed a hat like this before? And number two, why are there not more fair isle stocking cap patterns? I mean, there are some. And there are eleventy billion regular fair isle hat knitting patterns, but not all that many stocking caps in comparison.
It’s such a wasted opportunity. All that vertical real estate to decorate with cute designs! I truly had a blast with this one. It was the most fun ever.
I know from experience that knitting colorwork when you get to a section that requires double pointed knitting needles is not most people’s favorite thing. In fact, maybe that answers my question about why there aren’t more fair isle stocking caps!
It’s hard enough to make sure your floats are the right tension and then add in DPNs and the gaps between them and it’s tricky. I totally get that. But then recently I tried some of these “new” flip needles. I used Addi Flexi Flips. They kind of a cross between a double pointed knitting needle and a super duper short circular needle with a little splash of magic loop thrown in.
I bought these myself, by the way, and they have been 100% worth it. I mean, I do probably knit more hats than the average knitter, but seriously, they really do help, especially for fair isle.
Basically you can knit a very small diameter by splitting your stitches between only TWO needles and knitting with the third. It makes a project like this waaaaay easier. So anyway, that’s my unbiased two cents about it. Let me know if you’ve tried this kind of needle!
Anyway, let’s get started with some cute wintry fair isle stocking caps!
