This precious white seal hat knitting pattern is the perfect winter knit for your baby or toddler!
I love a cute winter animal hat knitting pattern and this adorable white seal hat in a really good one. My best friend had a super soft and fluffy white seal (aka harp seal) stuffed animal when we were kids and boy did I think that was just about the prettiest stuffed animal ever. Because of course everyone else’s toys are better than your own, am I right?
Anyway, this white seal hat knitting pattern is a cute one with the white seal’s signature big black eyes. I think that’s what makes them look so cute, humans are hard wired to think things with big eyes are adorable (aka babies). I also have this little seal some cute little front flippers that are fun, but won’t get in your little one’s way or flop around too much. And whiskers. I mean, you really can’t go wrong with whiskers ever, right?
This is a great intro to knitting my animal hats if you’re new around here. I have a bazillion (actual count) but on the scale of difficulty, this one’s easy peasy (don’t start with the giraffe or the cow, ha!) The eyes and nose are super easy to knit flat and not at all fiddly. They are also knit in garter stitch so they don’t curl up at all. And because it’s black yarn, the garter still looks nice. Same thing for the flippers, super easy to knit, just a couple of minutes for each!
If you knit a white seal hat for your baby, please don’t forget to share it with me, I really love to see what you all make and even more to see cute hats on your cute little ones!

White Seal Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions
0-3 month size
Using long-tail cast on, cast on 56 stitches with white yarn onto your circular needles. Join to knit in the round and (k1,p1) in a rib stitch for 5 rounds. Then knit all stitches until the hat is about
4 inches long.
Decrease (divide your stitches between 3 double pointed needles or use magic loop):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: knit all stitches
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: knit all stitches
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 10: knit all stitches
Round 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 12: k2tog and repeat to the end of the round
Cut yarn, thread through loops and pull to close. Weave in ends.
Eyes (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 4 stitches with black yarn, leaving a long cast on tail to stitch the eyes to the hat.
Rows 1: kfb, k2, kfb (6 stitches)
Row 2: knit all stitches
Row 3: ssk, k2, k2tog (4 stitches)
Cast off and weave in that end.
Nose:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 6 stitches with black yarn, leaving a long cast on tail to stitch the nose to the hat.
Rows 1-3: knit all stitches
Row 4: ssk, k2, k2tog (4 stitches)
Cast off and weave in that end.
Flippers (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 8 stitches with white yarn, leaving a long cast on tail to stitch the flippers to the hat.
Row 1: kfb, k6, kfb (10 stitches)
Rows 2-4: knit all stitches
Row 5: ssk, k6, k2tog (8 stitches)
Rows 6-10: knit all stitches
Cast off and leave a long cast off tail. Thread that cast off tail onto your yarn needle, weave it over on the cast off edge about 1/3 of the width and use it to make one vertical stitch to make the toe as shown. Repeat and make a second toe, then weave in that end on the underside of the flipper.
To assemble the hat:
Lay out the eyes and nose on the front of the hat to decide on placement. Thread the long cast on tail from the nose on a yarn needle and use it to stitch the nose securely to the hat. Repeat with each eye. Weave in those ends inside the hat.
Thread a length of black yarn on your yarn needle and use it to stitch whiskers on either side of the nose as shown. Make sure the whisker stitches aren’t too tight or they will pull when the hat stretches. Then use the same yarn to stitch one small vertical stitch and one longer horizontal stitch for the mouth as shown.
Finally, thread the long cast on tail from one flipper to sew it to the hat just above the ribbed brim as shown. Weave in the end inside the hat. Repeat with the other flipper.
Happy Knitting!
