The purl ridge stitch knitting pattern is a fun & easy twist on plain stockinette stitch that adds a little texture and interest to your next knitting project!
Purl ridge stitch is one of those stitch names that is not at all confusing. (Don’t get me started on sk2p). It’s a nice basic stitch that adds some texture to your knitting but it’s easy enough that even a beginner can do it!
What is purl ridge stitch?
Purl ridge stitch is horizontal purl ridges on a field of stockinette stitch. That is to say, it’s a field of knit stitches with rows of purl stitches at even intervals across it. Purl ridge stitch looks like textured horizontal stripes.
What is great about purl ridge stitch?
- Whether you knit it flat or in the round, purl ridge stitch is a lot more knit stitch than purl stitches which is a plus for most knitters.
- Purl ridge stitch is an interesting twist on regular stockinette stitch and is an easy way to add interest and texture to a knitting project.
- Purl ridge stitch is SUPER easy to knit.

As you can see from the photos, this stitch is not reversible. You may also notice that I had to pin the swatch and you can see that both the cast on edges and sides want to curl. Unfortunately, purl ridge stitch has the same edge curling issues as stockinette stitch.
Tips & Tricks for knitting purl ridge stitch:
- It can be difficult to count completed rows, be sure to keep track of which row you are on so your purl ridges are evenly spaced.
- Blocking can help even out your stitches.
- Because purl ridge stitch is on a background of stockinette, it does curl. This stitch is great for projects in the round where curling will not be a problem.
- If you are knitting purl ridge stitch flat, consider adding a border of a flat stitch like seed stitch or garter stitch to help the project lay flat.
