Knit an adorable mini moose hat for your north woods baby with this cute knitting pattern!
Oh, internet, you are a strange place. I bet you guys often wonder where I get ideas for these hats. Do you? I mean some of them are obvious cute baby hat ideas like a bear hat or a cat hat or a bunny hat. But a moose hat? Well, you know how these days facebook is bascially ALL videos that start autoplaying as soon you scroll past in an effort to suck you in and then the next thing you know, you just watched someone decorate a crazy intricate sugar cookie in the shape of a bouquet of flowers? That’s what happened with the moose hat.
I was scrolling on down, minding my own business and reading about what random funny thing happened with the kid of someone I went to high school with but haven’t seen in years…when I found myself watching a video of a moose chasing a person on a snowmobile. You guys! Moose are FAST! I had no idea! So then of course, I thought…Ooo, moose hat knitting pattern! Because that’s how my brain works these days.
Baby V is embarassed.
Anyway, so I got out some yarn and knit a moose hat. Inspired by a facebook viral video. The end. This a great example of why I try to always keep my sketchbook close, you never know when inspiration will hit!

Mini Moose Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions
Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles with the brown yarn. Join to knit in the round and knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch in a rib stitch for 4 rounds. Then knit all rows until the hat is about 5 inches long.
Decrease (divide the stitches between 3 double pointed needles and knit with the 4th):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: Knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: Knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: Knit all stitches to the end of the round.
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 10: Knit all stitches
Round 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 12: Knit all stitches
Round 13: k2tog repeat to the end of the round
Cut yarn, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.
Outer Ears (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 10 stitches using the brown yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the ears to the hat.
Rows 1-6: knit all odd rows, purl all even rows
Row 7: k2tog, k6, ssk
Row 8: purl all stitches
Row 9: k2tog, k4, ssk
Bind off and weave in that end.
Inner Ears (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 8 stitches using the tan yarn. Leave a long tail to stitch the inner ear to the outer.
Rows 1-6: knit all odd rows, purl all even rows
Row 7: k2tog, k4, ssk
Bind off and weave in that end.
Lay one tan inner ear, wrong (purl) sides together on top of one brown outer ear. Use the long tan cast on tail of the inner ear to stitch them together. Be sure your stitches only catch purl loops on the outer ear and do not show through to the other side of the ear.
Then pinch the ear at the base and use the brown cast on tail from the outer ear to put one stitch through the bottom to help it hold its shape.
Next, still using that same cast on tail, stitch each ear securely to the hat.
Antlers (make 4):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 6 stitches using the tan yarn. Leave a long tail on each antler piece to stitch the antlers together and to the hat.
Rows 1-5: knit all stitches
Row 6: k6 then, with backwards loop method, cast on 2 additional stitches
Row 7: kfb, k7
Row 8: k9
Row 9: kfb, k8
Row 10: k10
Row 11: k2tog, k8
Row 12: k9
Row 13: k2tog, k2tog, k5
Row 14: k7
Row 15: k2tog, k5
Row 16: k6 then, with backwards loop method, cast on 4 additional stitches
Row 17: kfb, k9
Rows 18 – 21: knit all stitches
Row 22: k2tog, k9
Row 23: k2tog, k8
Row 24: k2tog, k7
Bind off and weave in that end.
Use the long cast on tail from one antler piece to stitch two antler pieces together to make one double-thickness antler.
Repeat with the other two antler pieces. Then use the remaining long cast on tail in each pair to securely stitch the antlers to the sides of the hat.
And that’s it, your moose hat is finished!
The PDF printable also contains instructions for sizes 0-3, 12 months and 2T+!

The pattern works up so quickly, was fun to do and it fits the child it was made for! I have a question about the antlers, though. They flop over. I’ve even tried restitching them on, thinking that I had them on crooked. But, still flopping. Advise, please!

Hi Blanche,
They’re going to flop a little, but I would make sure, when you sew them on that you stitch on BOTH sides. You can also spread the two sides at the base a little bit apart to give it a wider area to attach to. Finally, I haven’t tried it, but you could try putting a piece of thin cardboard inside the antlers and see if that helps. 😊
Hope that helps!
