Knit easy twist stitches in worsted yarn to create this gorgeous hashtag hat knitting pattern for your baby or toddler!
The Hashtag Hat knitting pattern is a fun one to knit because it kind of looks like complicated cables, but in reality, it’s made with easy twist stitches or faux cables. Basically the twist stiches are 1×1 cables but you don’t need a cable needle to knit them. And once you learn how to knit the right twist stitch and left twist stitch, a whole lot world of interesting patterns opens up to you!
I do really love how this one turned out, I’m calling it the hashtag hat because it kind of looks like hash marks, but it’s also kind of like a diagonal basketweave hat. Whatever name or description works for you, choose your favorite color of worsted yarn and get to work.
I would like to suggest, if you knit a hashtag hat, choose a solid color yarn. This hand dyed malabrigo worsted that I used in my sample is about as much color variation as you can get away with without loosing the ability to see the beautiful stitch pattern. And please, do not knit this pattern with speckled or variegated yarn. Please, please, please!
Save that pretty multi-colored yarn for a different project, I promise, you don’t be happy with the outcome if you use it on this one!
If you have never knit the right twist stitch and left twist stitch before, here’s how you do it:
RT = right twist = skip the 1st stitch on the left needle and knit into the FRONT of the 2nd, leave that stitch on the left needle, then knit the 1st skipped stitch and drop both.
LT = left twist = skip the 1st stitch on the left needle and knit into the BACK of the 2nd, leave that stitch on the left needle, then knit the 1st skipped stitch and drop both.
You may want to practice when you swatch (and don’t forget to swatch in the hashtag pattern for best results!) to get the hang of knitting these twist stitches, but once you do them each a few times, you should be all set! Ready?
