This diagonal woven slip stitch knitting pattern doesn’t really have an official name. There is a woven stitch out there but it’s not the same as this one with diagonal lines. So I went with a descriptive name because it is, in fact, diagonal, woven and uses slipped stitches. I use this gorgeous stitch pattern in my Hazel Herringbone Cowl knitting pattern. What is diagonal woven slip stitch?
This pretty stitch is formed but alternating regular knit stitches with stitches that are slipped with the working yarn held to the front of the work. This creates the horizontal lines that create the diagonals. It looks intricate and fancy but it’s actually REALLY easy.
What’s great about diagonal woven slip stitch?
- It’s super super easy to knit both flat and in the round.
- It’s BEAUTIFUL
- It almost looks like a faux herringbone pattern.
- It’s unique and not something you’ll see everywhere.

Tips & Tricks for knitting diagonal woven slip stitch
- When you are slipping stitches with the working yarn held in front, make sure you don’t pull too tightly on that working yarn when you bring it back to the back of your work.
- Slip your stitches purlwise.
- This stitch pattern does curl like stockinette so consider using it for projects in the round or adding a border of a some non-curling border stitches seed or garter.

Notes:
sl = slip one stitch purlwise
wyif = work the stitch with the working yarn held in front of your project
Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches
Row 1 (RS): (k2, sl2 wyif) repeat to the end of the row
Row 2 and all other even WS rows: purl all stitches
Row 3: k3 (sl2 wyif, k2) repeat to the last stitch, then k1
Row 5: (sl2 wyif, k2) repeat to the end of the row
Row 7: (k1, sl2 wyif, k1) repeat to the end of the row
Row 8: purl all stitches
Repeat rows 1-8

- Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches
- Row 1 (RS): (k2, sl2 wyif) repeat to the end of the row
- Row 2 and all other even WS rows: purl all stitches
- Row 3: k3 (sl2 wyif, k2) repeat to the last stitch, then k1
- Row 5: (sl2 wyif, k2) repeat to the end of the row
- Row 7: (k1, sl2 wyif, k1) repeat to the end of the row
- Row 8: purl all stitches
- Repeat rows 1-8
