The twisted stockinette stitch knitting pattern is a unique twist (literally) on regular stockinette stitch that is perfect for your next knitting project!
A twisted stockinette stitch is a fun variation on regular stockinette and results in a knit fabric that’s a little more stable and has an interesting texture. This fun stitch is great for when you want your knitting to have a little something else.
What is twisted stockinette stitch?
Twisted stockinette stitch is formed by literally twisting your knit stitches. Usually we talk about this as an inadvertent mistake but when you do it on purpose it creates a different (and lovely) texture from regular stockinette stitch. When knitting a twisted stitch you will knit through the back loop (ktbl) instead of the through the front loop of the stitch, this literally twists your stitch.
For twisted stockinette stitch you can twist your stitches in every row (full twisted stockinette stitch) or every other row. Today we are talking about the twisted stockinette stitch where you knit twisted stitches every OTHER row. That means you’re alternating rows of twisted knit stitches with rows of regular purl stitches.
What is there to like about twisted stockinette stitch?
- It’s different and creates an interesting texture.
- The resulting knitted fabric is more taut and stable (i.e. a bit less stretchy) than regular stockinette stitch.
- It’s fun to try new things!

Tips & Tricks for knitting twisted stockinette stitch:
- To twist your knit stitches, make sure you are knitting through the back loop instead of the front loop.
- Like regular stockinette stitch, twisted stockinette stitch will curl on the ends and edges, consider using it for project knit in the round, or adding a border of non-curling stitches if you are knitting it flat.
- Twisted stockinette is a little bit denser than regular stockinette because of the twisted stitches so your gauge will probably differ. Be sure to swatch.
- Blocking may help to even out your stitches.
