The Twist Market Bag knitting pattern has a fun twisting lace stitch and is the perfect stretchy cotton bag for all of your market purchases!
Last year was my first foray into designing a bag, I designed the Rambling Market Bag and it’s incredibly cute. I really love it. I used to think knitting with cotton yarn wasn’t my favorite, but after that bag, I was hooked. And now we have the Twist Market Bag knitting pattern!
I think I’ve decided a market bag pattern is going to become a yearly thing. It’s really hard to find things you actually WANT to knit in the summer when it’s hot. I mean, don’t get me wrong, summer is a great time to get ahead on your winter holiday knitting. But sometimes you need a lighter project too.
But what is a market bag really? It’s the perfect, durable, stretchy, strong lace net bag that’s amazing for things like farmer’s market purchases. It bunches up pretty small so you can keep it in your purse if you and and it’s strong and expands so you can fit tons of stuff inside. Produce, flowers, maybe some seedlings, whatever you want!
Don’t let the face that’s a lace pattern scare you. Lace knitting is really just a pattern of yarn overs and decreases. It sounds much scarier than it is. This one is pretty easy to get the hang of and if you choose to add some stitch markers that can help too.
Another thing to note is that cotton yarn is perfect for this kind of project. It’s strong and lightweight and quite durable. It’s also generally affordable. In fact, this would be a great gift, it knits up quickly, it’s useful, and it doesn’t cost a ton to make!
If you have objections to cotton yarn, some people find it difficult to work with. Consider using bamboo needles with it and taking breaks to rest your hands if you get tired. And while cotton is washable (but don’t get it hot, it can shrink) it will absorb a lot of water and be heavy when wet so just keep that in mind if you need to hand wash your market bag!
Pro tip: If you know the magic loop method, you can use it to knit the bottom of the bag instead of DPN’s, you may find it easer!
