This adorable Rainbow Stocking Cap knitting pattern has alternating stripes of sky, rainbow and clouds with a fluffy pom pom on top, includes instructions for 4 sizes from baby to toddler!
This new Rainbow Stocking Cap was baby V’s definite first choice to wear to school after I finished this year’s spring rainbow patterns. She grabbed this one so fast off the table she was like the Flash! And she was super delighted to show her friends, who, as you can imagine, often get excited about her new hats. Wow, I hope this phase lasts forever.
Anyway, this one is so much fun with alternating stripes of sky blue stockinette, some puffy white purl stripes and then colorful rainbow stripes. It’s like a pretty sunny day in baby hat form. What more could you ask for, really?
Also, if you’ve not put your little one in a stocking cap style hat recently, let me tell you, they are SO cute when they’re running around on the playground with the little pom pom bouncing around. It’s truly wonderful. I wish stocking caps for adults would come back in style? Or were they ever in style besides as old timey nightclothes?
Anyway, back on topic! This cute little hat is a super quick and easy knit and is knit in the round. You do need double pointed knitting needles to knit the top of the hat, but if you know the magic loop method, this is a perfect project for it. I’ve also found that flexi flips are great too!
One tip for knitting this project before you start: please be aware, because of the rainbow stripes, there are a decent amount of ends to weave in at the end. I don’t mind weaving in ends, but if that’s something that’s not your favorite, prepare yourself. Also, because the rainbow stripes are just one round each and that’s a lot of ends, I found it helped to tie the start and end of each rainbow color loosely together, just to hold them in place as I continued to knit. Then, when I finished the hat, I untied those loose knots and wove in the ends properly. And of course, if you use one of those fun techniques for weaving in ends as you go, even better!
Are you ready? If you knit a rainbow stocking cap, I hope you share it with me, I love to see what you knit!
