The Pom Pom Bow Hat knitting pattern is a cute and cozy folded brim hat pattern topped with a big pom pom that’s tied with a bow!
Does anyone remember “put a bird on it” from Portlandia? It was a comedy sketch poking fun about how it was so trendy in the early 2010’s to put birds on everything to make them seem cute and crafty. Anyway, I am deep in my “put a bow on it” phase. Honestly bow hats are what started this entire job for me, so I’ve got embrace it!
The other day I was thinking about this and thought it would be cute to combing a bow with my other favorite hat feature, poms. And the Pom Pom Bow Hat knitting pattern was born!
This cute hat is knit in the round on circular needles with double pointed knitting needles used for the decrease. The hat has a cozy folded brim. Then I will show you how to add the pompom and bow on top. It’s like an adorable present all wrapped up.
If you do knit this hat, make sure you add a couple of stitches to the bow to secure it to the hat and make it safe for your little one to wear. And as always, don’t leave babies unattended wearing anything with embellishments. You know, common sense, etc.

Pom Pom Bow Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions (size 12 months)
Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles. Join to knit in the round and k1, p1 in a rib stitch for 4 inches. This is the folded brim. Then knit all rounds until the hat is about 5 inches long (measure with the brim folded up).
Decrease (divide your stitches evenly between 3 double pointed needles or use magic loop):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: knit all stitches
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: knit all stitches
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 10: knit all stitches
Round 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 12: k2tog and repeat to the end of the round
Cut yarn, thread through loops and pull to close. Weave in ends.
Next, make a large pom pom using a pom pom maker or other method of your choice. Mine is a 3 inch diameter pom pom. Sew the pom securely to the top of the hat.
To make the bow:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 10 stitches.
Row 1: (k1, slip one stitch purlwise with yarn in front) repeat to the end of the row.
Repeat this row until the bow is 3 inches long, cast off and weave in ends.
To make the tie:
Using double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches and knit an icord for 10 inches. Then cast off and weave in ends.
To assemble the hat:
First, tie the icord around the base of the pom pom tightly. Then lay the bow on top of the knot, tie the cord again around the bow to gather it in the center, maneuvering the knot to the bottom where it won’t be seen. Tie again to make it a double knot. Then thread some yarn on a yarn needle and add a couple of stitches to make sure that the bow is secure. See a video of this technique, below!
Happy Knitting!
