Dress your little one up for an imaginary ocean voyage in an adorable hat made with my Narwhal Hat Knitting Pattern for newborns, babies and toddlers!
Ok, before we get to my Narwhal Hat knitting pattern, I about to admit something totally embarrassing to you. But first let me say, I totally blame the claymation Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer movie from 1964. Remember the part where Rudolph is floating on an iceberg and he says hello to a narwhal? It’s so iconic, there’s an animated narwhal in Elf too.
Where is this going, you ask? Honestly, up until like last year, I absolutely thought narwhals were imaginary. Like a unicorn or centaur. I mean, I consider myself a fairly well-educated person, I read the New York Times, I have a Master’s Degree… But anyway, one day O was watching Wild Kratts and they had a narwhal episode, and I said, “Wait, I thought the Wild Kratts only did episodes on real animals!” And O looked at me like I was the biggest moron ever. Ha!
But in my defense, the entire rest of Rudolph is filled with imaginary creatures! The abominable snow monster, a snowman that sings, elves… So there you go, it was like finally learning the right lyrics to a song you’ve been singing wrong your entire life, you feel incredibly stupid and a little disappointed. But, the end result is I got to make you a narwhal hat. Which is based on a totally real and not imaginary animal. You’re welcome.

Cut yarn and pull through loops to close, weave in this end in the inside of the horn. Stuff the horn with scraps of the same tan yarn so that it stands upright on its own.
Flippers (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 10 stitches with blue yarn, leave a long tail to stitch the flippers to the hat.
Rows 1-10: knit all stitches
Row 11: k8, k2tog
Knit all stitches for even rows
Row 13: k7, k2tog
Row 15: k6, k2tog
Row 17: k5, k2tog
Cast off and weave in that end. Use the long cast on tails to stitch the flippers to the sides of the hat as shown (face the curved edge towards the front of the hat).
To assemble the hat:
Using its long cast on tail, stitch the horn to the front of the hat as shown.
Then thread a length of charcoal yarn on your yarn needle and use it to stitch the face. Make two short horizontal stitches for the eyes and a loose curved line of backstitching for the mouth. Make sure these stitches are fairly loose so they don’t pull when the hat stretches.
