Dot stitch is a great stitch for beginning knitters. Once you learn how to knit and how to purl, there are a lot of patterns and textures you can create using only those two basic stitches. The dot stitch is one of them with small polka dot purl stitches across the front. I use the dot stitch on my adorable Dot to Dot Hat knitting pattern!
What is dot stitch?
Dot stitch is small polka dot purl patterns offset on a field of stockinette stitch background.
What is awesome about dot stitch?
- It’s very easy, you only need to know how to knit and purl
- It adds some fun texture to your knitting
- The pattern is so simple you can memorize it and knit away
What does dot stitch look like?

Notice that this stitch is not reversible.
Tips & Tricks for knitting dot stitch:
- Like stockinette stitch, dot stitch will curl on the ends and edges.
- Because of that dot stitch works well in the round or with a border around it.
- Consider placing stitch markers to remind you where your purl stitches go and you may not even need to look at the written pattern after a while.
Dot Stitch Knitting Pattern (knit flat)
Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches:
Row 1 (RS): (k3, p1) repeat to the end of the row.
Row 2 (WS): purl all stitches
Row 3: k1 (p1, k3) repeat to the last 3 stitches, then p1, k2
Row 4: purl all stitches
Repeat rows 1-4.

Dot Stitch Knitting Pattern (in the round)
Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches and join to knit in the round.
Round 1: (k3, p1) repeat to the end of the round.
Round 2: knit all stiches
Round 3: k1 (p1, k3) repeat to the last 3 stitches, then p1, k2
Round 4: knit all stitches
Repeat rounds 1-4.

- Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches:
- Row 1 (RS): (k3, p1) repeat to the end of the row.
- Row 2 (WS): purl all stitches
- Row 3: k1 (p1, k3) repeat to the last 3 stitches, then p1, k2
- Row 4: purl all stitches
- Repeat rows 1-4.
