These easy DIY Dollar Store Snowglobes are super fun and quick to make with some key tips & tricks!
You guys, I am not always a huge dollar store crafter. I hate to admit it. I do not have the knack for dollar store crafts that my friend Bre does. She can make magic out of literally anything they sell.
Me? I have to selective about only picking up really good stuff because otherwise I’m liable to screw it up and it’ll look like it came from the nickel store. That being said, if you have a Dollar Tree near you, RUN over and grab the DIY snowglobes they’re selling right now.
This is not a drill.
These are NICE kits. I was totally shocked when I opened it up. Not only does the screw top screw on nice and tight. There is an inside stopper as well. Also, the come is solid AND it came with VERY comprehensive instructions.
So, I made a couple, they’re super cute and I wanted to share with you what I learned about making your own snowglobes that are actually cute and functional.
Tips & Tricks for Making DIY Snowglobes
- Start with a good kit
- Choose your snow carefully, chunky white glitter is the best choice
- Choose nice glitter, if possible, find glass glitter, the first time I did this, I used super cheap glitter and after a week the water turned cloudy!
- Avoid the following types of “snow”: fine glitter, mica chips, snow made of plastic, and styrofoam snow. The fine glitter makes the water cloudy and the rest float too much!
- Be sure not to skip the sanding step
- Choose a waterproof decoration to go inside your snow globe
- Allow the glue to set for a full 24 hours before adding the water
DIY Snowglobe Supply List
If possible, grab these supplies at your local dollar store, if you don’t have one nearby, here are some similar choices!
Small wooden or plastic ornaments or figurines
DIY Snowglobe Instructions
- Open your snowglobe kit, unscrew the cap and pry out the inner stopper.
- Then sand the flat inside surface of the inner stopper AND sand the bottom of your ornament to rough them both up, this will help the glue stick.
- Hot glue the ornament to the center of the stopper and let set overnight.
- The next day, put the globe upside down in a bowl and fill almost to the top with water. Add about 2 TB of chunky white glitter.
- Stir the glitter so it falls to the bottom.
- Insert the stopper with the ornament attached into the globe OVER A SINK. Press and seal the stopper carefully. My instructions said to add glue, but for me, this made it too difficult to close so I skipped additional glue.
- Finally, screw the screw top back on tightly.
