Knit a sweet cuddly koala hat in any size from newborn to kid to adult with this easy knitting pattern!
This Baby Koala Hat knitting pattern is just about the cutest thing ever!
Baby V has quite a few nicknames, some that we gave her, some that O invented and some from her grandparents, but they’re all cute. They’re mostly based off the fact that this baby loves to snuggle.
In her perfect world, she would be carried around all day long. Now that she’s starting to get a little more mobile and rolling around, she will play for a bit longer on the floor but she’d still rather you pick her up. And it’s so cute because she really really likes to be carried around by Daddy.
Actually, the part I forgot to mention is that while she likes to be held, she does not like to held and be stationary. Forget sitting down with her, that’s not what she wants and she’s been like that her entire life.
Thankfully gone are the days when I would literally pace back and forth from the kitchen and the living room for two hours straight just to keep her quiet, but she still would rather you be standing and moving. And Daddy is a pacer. He pretty much is incapable of standing in one spot when he’s on his feet and that is just peachy with miss V.
She snuggles up on his hip and just looks happy as a clam while he putters around the house. And that’s where this koala hat came from. Because when she’s cuddled up to him she really does look like a sweet little baby koala holding on to its mommy or daddy koala.
And I have to say, this koala hat turned out even cuter than I thought it would. So let me know if you make a cuddly koala hat for your little baby koala, I love to see the projects you make!

Cut yarn, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.
To knit the nose:
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 4 stitches with the charcoal yarn. Leave a long cast-on tail to stitch the nose to the hat.
Row 1: kfb all stitches (8 stitches)
Row2: purl all stitches
Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb (10 stitches)
Rows 4-14: purl all even rows and knit all odd rows
Row 15: k2tog, k6, ssk (8 stitches)
Row 16: purl all stitches
Row 17: k2tog, k2tog, ssk, ssk (4 stitches)
Bind off and weave in this end.
To knit the outer ears (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 12 stitches with the light gray yarn. Leave a long cast-on tail to stitch the ears to the hat.
Rows 1-6: knit all odd rows, purl all even rows
Row 7: k2tog, k8, ssk (10 stitches)
Row 8: purl all stitches
Row 9: k2tog, k2tog, k2, ssk, ssk (6 stitches)
Row 10: p2tog, p2, p2tog (4 stitches)
Bind off and weave in this end.
To make the inner ears (make 2):
Using double pointed needles as straight needles, cast on 10 stitches with the white yarn. Leave a long cast-on tail to stitch the inner ears to the outer ears.
Rows 1-5: purl all odd rows, knit all even rows (start with a purl row)
Row 6: k2tog, k6, ssk (8 stitches)
Row 7: purl all stitches
Row 8: k2tog, k2tog, ssk, ssk (4 stitches)
Row 9: p2tog, p2tog (2 stitches)
Bind off and weave in this end.
To assemble the hat:
Using the long cast-on tail, whipstitch the nose to the front of the hat a bit below center. To assemble the ears, lay the white inner ear on top of the gray outer ear with the wrong (purl) sides together. Use the long cast-on tail of the white inner ear to whipstitch the inner ear to the outer ear. Make sure you can’t see your stitches from the other side. Repeat with second ear. Now use the long cast-on tail from the gray outer ears to attach the assembled ears to the hat. Make sure to stitch them tightly because babies pull things! Finally use a length of charcoal yarn and a yarn needle to add two short straight stitches to the front on either side of the nose for the koala’s eyes. Knot and weave in ends in side the hat. Make sure your stitches aren’t too tight or they will pull when the hat stretches. And that’s it! Snuggle up with your little baby koala!
