Beach Ball Hat Knitting Pattern

Get ready for summer with this colorful beach ball hat knitting pattern, the perfect summer knit for anyone from baby, to child to adult!

A Beach Ball Hat knitting pattern was on my to-do list for a long time but I couldn’t quite wrap my head around how to to execute it.

This summer I decided it was definitely going to happen though so I sat down and puzzled it out. I considered knitting each panel separately and seaming them together but I really hate seaming.

So instead we’re knitting this beach ball hat with intarsia. That means you’ll change colors of yarn as you knit across each row (yes, this one’s knit flat!). The most important thing to know about intarsia is that the colors are NOT carried across the entire row like fair isle so you need to twist the yarns at the color changes to avoid having gaps in your work.

If you don’t know how to twist your yarns for intarsia color changes, google it! I’ll add a tutorial soon but for now there are many good ones on the web.

In the mean time, grab your primary colored yarns and let’s get knitting a beach ball hat! I went with white, yellow, blue and red, but there are lots of ways to knit a classic beach ball out there, I can’t wait to see yours!

Beach Ball Hat Knitting Pattern

Sizes included: 0-3 months, (6 months, 1-2 years, 3-6 years, Child Large/Adult Small, Adult Large) Read our sizing guidelines post for more information.

Gauge: 19 stitches = 4 inches

• Worsted weight yarn
• US 7 (4.5 mm) 16″ circular knitting needles
• US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles
• Yarn needle
