The gorgeous tri-color linen stitch hat knitting pattern makes a beautiful mulitcolored pattern with no colorwork! You’ll love this easy baby hat knitting pattern for your little one!

Let’s talk about my new tri-color linen stitch hat knitting pattern. Linen stitch is one of my favorite knitting stitches. Did you know that it’s one of a handful of knitting stitches that doesn’t curl up? That’s not particularly relevant when we’re knitting hats, but it’s amazing for flat knitting like scarves! Curling edges are every knitters enemy, right?
I also like linen stitch because it’s kind of a subtle low texture (compared to something with a high texture like seed stitch). And, did I mention that linen stitch is easy? Anyway, if you want to take your linen stitch knitting projects up a notch, you can introduce more colors to your knitting. Knitting the exact same stitch and alternating which color you knit each row it, results in a MUCH more complex looking stitch.
In fact, tri-color linen stitch really looks like some kind of stranded/Fair Isle/colorwork knitting but it’s not. I guess technically it would count as mosaic knitting instead which is kind of fun if you’ve never tried that before.
Anyway, the key to my tri-color linen stitch knitting pattern is to repeat the three colors in the same order, one per round, NO MATTER WHAT. If we call the three colors of your choice colors A, B & C, you will knit round 1 with color A, round 2 with color B, round 3 with color C, round 4 with color A, round 5 with color B and round 6 with color C, in that same order (ABCABC…) for the entire hat after the ribbing.
If you get confused, it may help to keep track of your round numbers either on paper or with some other method of your choice. The good news is, because you repeat each color every third row, you can carry the unused colors up inside the hat instead of cutting them after each round (which would result in a million ends to weave in).
I should also note that linen stitch is really pretty on the wrong side as well. It’s not the same, but it’s still nice which makes for a really lovely finished product. If you knit a tri-color linen stitch hat, I’d love it if you’d share it with me!

Using long-tail cast on, cast on 56 stitches onto your circular needles in the lightest color. Join to knit in the round and k1, p1 in a rib stitch for 5 rounds.
Throughout the rest of the hat (including the decrease) alternate working with colors A, B & C for one round each in that order (ABCABC…) For example, knit round 1 with color A, knit round 2 with color B, knit round 3 with color C, and knit round 4 with color A etc. You can carry unused colors up inside of the hat as you work.
Note, for this pattern:
sl1 = sl1 wyif = slip one stitch purlwise with yarn in front
Round 1: (sl1, k1) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: (k1, sl1) repeat to the end of the round
Repeat rounds 1 & 2 in the ABC color pattern until the hat is about 4 inches long.
