Valentine’s Hearts and Flowers Felt Wreath

I have a secret…I’m kind of obsessed with wreaths. I love that they’re an easy way to add a little holiday decor to your house. I like how they’re (generally) a relatively small and manageable craft project. I like how you get to keep them up for a month or two and then put them away and put up something new. It’s like a rotating art gallery!  I can’t wait until someday I have a real front door to put them on. Although for the moment, I usually hang them on the door to our bedroom and it’s kind of nice because, as opposed to a front door, I can actually see and enjoy them all day.

But anyway, I fully blame Martha for my wreath obsession. When I was about 10ish, my mom got a Martha Stewart Christmas Entertaining book. It was one of her early ones and it was full of things like glittered pears and gilded pinecones. And of course wreaths. And this was pre-internet. So my young craft appetite was starved for inspiration. There was no pinterest, there were no craft blogs, there weren’t even really all that many craft books out because handmade hadn’t become trendy yet.  Anyway, I loooooved that book. I spent hours poring over it and eventually talked my mom into making an evergreen wreath like one of the ones Martha made.

We went to the craft store and bought a wreath form and some wire and then we cut some evergreen branches off the bushes outside and got to work. And if I recall it took for.ev.er. And it was a huge mess. And the needles were prickly and itchy. But like all craft projects (for me anyway), there was something immensely satisfying about having created this thing all by myself.

My one problem, however, is that I have a major objection to the price of wreath forms. I just do not understand why they cost so much (even with a coupon). I know there are all kinds of ideas to use things like cheap pool noodles etc. but I tend to prefer to wing it and just kind of use what I have and see what happens. It’s like an exciting craft adventure! What will I end up with?!

So anyway, I made this Valentine’s Hearts and Flowers Felt Wreath solely out of things I already had in the house, but if you had to go buy supplies, I promise, it would be a cheap one!

Valentine’s Hearts and Flowers Felt Wreath 

Supplies:

Cardboard or a wreath form

Approx. 6-7 sheets of craft felt

scissors

hot glue gun

Instructions:

1.For the base of my wreath, I used a simple circle cut out of cardboard. My wreath was about 12″ and I just traced a dinner plate and then a salad plate for the center. I cut it out using an exacto knife.

2. If the look of raw cardboard bothers you, cover it in some way. Because I wasn’t exactly sure what I was making when I started (and also because I’m nuts), I tried wrapping it in yarn which actually looked pretty cool but took a gazillion years so I don’t totally recommend it since you mostly won’t see it.

If you’re feeling very bored, use yarn like I did but otherwise I would say paint it or cover it in scrapbook paper or washi tape or something.

3. Next you need to make the flowers, I made three different kinds for variety and texture. I will call them the Spiral Flower, the Fringe Flower and the Folded Flower. Make as many as you can, you want this wreath to be really full and fluffy!

First up, the Spiral Flower:

Cut circles of varying sized out of felt. They do NOT have to be exact circles. I think these flowers actually look better when they are a bit uneven!

Cut the circle into a spiral.

Starting at the center of the spiral, wind the felt up around itself, periodically securing with hot glue as you wind to form a flower.

Next, The Fringe Flower:

Cut a long, gently sloping strip of felt. It should be about 1/2 inch shorter at one end than the other. My felt was 9″ x 12″ so my strips were 9″ long.

Next, cut the strip into fringe. My fringe was about 1/8-1/4 inch wide. Again, you don’t have to be exact. Cut down about 3/4 of the way through the strip.

Next, starting at the wider end, wind the strip up, adding hot glue every inch or so to secure.

And Finally the Folded Flower:

These flowers do look better with fairly even circles. But really, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just aim for more circle than oval and you’ll be fine.

Fold the circle in half and secure with a little hot glue in the center.

Then fold it in half the other way, adding more hot glue near the center to secure.

You can add these to the wreath alone or you can glue 2 or 3 together to form a bigger flower!

Finally, assemble your wreath, glue the flowers pretty tightly together onto your wreath form using hot glue. Try to evenly space the different types and sizes of flowers until the wreath is full and dense.

Then add a few little hearts cut from a different color of felt. I used light pink. And voilà, you’re done!

The best part about a project like this is that once you know how to make these felt flowers, you can use them for all kinds of things, little hairbows, garlands, vases, necklaces, there are a ton of possibilities!
