Jolly Jack-O’-Lantern Hat Knitting Pattern

Honestly, is there a more annoying word to type in the world than jack-o’-lantern? It trips me up every time and then I have to google where the punctuation goes and if I REALLY need the apostrophe and whether or not it is capitalized. Who decides these things?

Anyway, tangent aside, I am very into my cute new jolly jack-o’-lantern hat knitting pattern. This adorable hat is a quick knit, knit in the round on circular knitting needles ( you need DPNs or magic loop for the decrease section) and then the adorable classic smiling pumpkin pattern is added after the fact with duplicate stitch.

Are you familiar with duplicate stitch for knitting? It’s kind of like a cross between embroidery and knitting. Duplicate stitch allows you to add colorwork motifs to your knitting projects without juggling multiple strands of yarn while you knit as you would with Fair Isle knitting or intarsia.

And yes, you capitalize Fair Isle but not jack-o’-lantern. The English language is something else.

Anyway, if you already know how to do duplicate stitch then you probably love it just as much as I do. I love embroidery and so I also love duplicate stitch, I find it easy and relaxing. And if you don’t know how, check out my handy duplicate stitch tutorial!

This knitting pattern includes instructions for knitting the basic hat and a color chart for the duplicate stitch jack-o’-lantern motif. This is a fun one to knit! I recommend working your duplicate stitch in horizontal rows and adding the black face stitches as you go instead of at the end, you will get a neater result.

Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches

• Worsted weight yarn
• US 7 (4.5 mm) 16″ circular knitting needles
• US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles
• Yarn needle
