This super adorable DIY Rainbow Costume for Kids is so easy to make and so CUTE! It includes instructions for cloud tutu, rainbow shirt, raindrop leggings AND an adorable sunshine hair clip!
You guys, this DIY Rainbow Costume, KILLS me. I mean, I just can’t even. And it’s also got me panicking…what am I going to do when my kids don’t let me pick their costumes anymore?!
Is this why people have like 6 children?
I am joking though, I wouldn’t force them to wear something they didn’t want to. I just tend to plant the seed of ideas I like and then let them “choose” their own. You know how it is, parents.
Anyway, this year, Baby V is fully on board dressing up as a “rainbow with a cloud!” Some years I struggle to find an idea that I want to put together and the kids are into. But this year it was super easy. Phew!
I also sometimes struggle with coming up with unique ideas that haven’t been done to death. So yes, there are totally other DIY Rainbow costumes for kids out there.
But none like this! Mostly they involve a bulky wearable rainbow. But let’s be real, can a toddler go to preschool and play wearing a giant cardboard costume? No. No they cannot.
I just can’t force my kids into costumes that they can’t move in. Even my most popular costume, Thomas the Train, comes off easily so kids can run around in the train engineer outfit. I am nothing if not practical (thank you Girl Scouts)!
So I knew MY DIY rainbow costume needed to be something Baby V can wear to school and play and have snack and sit on her carpet square in. And also be the cutest thing you’ve ever seen.
Mission accomplished!
And and p.s….in another nod to practicality, it’s almost always cold on Halloween here in Chicago, so I also maybe possibly designed a matching sunshine hat to go with it that she can wear for trick-or-treating. I may have done that… Ok, I totally did. And it’s hilarious! Here’s a sneak peek…
DIY Rainbow Costume for Kids Supply List
DIY Rainbow Costume for Kids Instructions
To make the cloud tutu:
Make sure you start with one of those longer tutus, like the one I linked to in the supply list, not one that’s already short and fluffy.
- Lay out your tutu with the right side up, mine has three layers of tulle.
- Take the top layer and fold it under the skirt, trapping the other two layers of tulle inside bunched up.
- Using a needle and thread, stitch the edge of that folded under top layer of tulle to the waistband of the tutu. You will need to gather the edge of tulle as you go around. Make sure your stitches are secure but not too tight so the skirt can still stretch.
- Continue all the way around until the top layer of tulle is completely folded under and attached to the waistband and the other two layers of tulle are trapped inside making a fluffy cloud bubble skirt!
To make the Rainbow shirt and Raindrop leggings:
You are welcome to purchase and use fabric paint, but in an effort to use what I have already, I combined acrylic craft paint with textile medium to make my own fabric paint. Make sure to follow the instructions on the textile medium which may include washing your fabric before painting it!
- IMPORTANT!!! Cut pieces of something non-porous to go inside the leggings and the shirt so the paint won’t bleed through to the back. I used scraps of freezer paper. Wax paper, thick cardboard or tinfoil would also work.
- Sketch raindrop shapes on your leggins and a rainbow arc on your tshirt with your disappearing ink fabric pen. Start with the front sides only.
- Mix your paints and textile medium according to the instructions on the textile medium. Mine suggested one part textile medium to two parts paint.
- Carefully paint in the raindrop shapes and rainbow.
- Let the paint dry overnight.
- Flip your leggings and shirt over (keep the freezer paper or other non-porous surface inside them), and repeat steps 2-5. If you want your rainbow to meet up at the shoulders, make sure you mark the places where each color hits the top of the shirt on the other side.
To make the Sun Hair Clip:
- Cut one circle from orange felt (I traced the lid of the paint containers I used to mix the paints for this project, it’s about 1 1/2 inches in diameter) and one slightly larger orange circle with spikes around it as shown.
- Glue the yellow circle on top with hot glue. When that is dry, glue the sun securely to an alligator hair clip.
