Classic Mom Heart Tattoo Hat Knitting Pattern

This adorable duplicate stitch pattern, the Mom Tattoo Hat knitting pattern features a classic heart tattoo with the word MOM on the front, don’t worry, instructions include how to knit one for DAD or other caregivers!

I was SO excited when I had the idea to make a Mom Tattoo hat knitting pattern. Of course I googled because I wanted to know where the mom tattoo thing started. And the answer is…murky. Like many things, it possibly attributed to sailors. But basically, no one knows for sure.

Having confirmed that the origins of the Mom tattoo were a question but not questionable, I got to work designing this cute duplicate stitch knitting pattern. I decided immediately that it could not just be for Moms. There are lots of other people who care for little ones besides mom so I designed three separate options so your tattoo hat can say either “MOM”, “DAD”, or “YOU”. That seems to cover pretty much everyone.

I would have loved to include other options like MAMA, or GRAMMY or POPS or whatever but I only had space for three letters so this is what we’re going with. The best thing about duplicate stitch designs is that you add them to the project after you have done all the knitting. I like that because I can speed through the baby hat knitting part without juggling multiple strands of yarn. And then I can decide easily on placement at the end. It’s a win-win.

For the first time, I also added a little bit of embroidery to this pattern. I used a quick backstitch in charcoal yarn to outline the white banner. This is of course, optional. If you do add the outline, just thread some charcoal yarn on your yarn needle, outline the banner with short stitches as shown and make sure those stitches aren’t too tight so they don’t pull when the hat stretches. Weave in your ends inside the hat. Piece of cake!

Classic Mom Tattoo Hat Knitting Pattern

(includes Sizes 0-3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 2T+)

Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches

Worsted weight yarn in gray, white, red and charcoal
US 7 16″ circular knitting needles
US 7 double pointed needles
Yarn needle
