So today I’m participating in something awesome. I teamed up with some other great bloggers and we’re all showing you what it’s like behind the scenes. Where do we work? How do we take photos? How do we get it all done? And the cool part is everyone fits blogging into their life (literally and metaphorically) differently.
I, for one, prefer to not hole myself away in an office because I feel like I’m missing everything. And on the weekdays when O’s not in school, I just CAN’T be in an office because I have to be watching him. And anyway, my office doesn’t have windows so I get kind of sad in there anyway. So I work primarily at the kitchen island and dining room table. Want to see? Don’t be scared because when I’m mid project, it can be kind of a complete disaster. (Actually this isn’t so terrible, it gets much worse sometimes…)
I actually really love working on granite because it’s so easy to clean. And the pendant lights over the island make for great task lighting. Obviously it’s not super convenient when it gets to be dinner or lunch time though and 90% of the time I have to completely clean everything up at the end of the day even if I’m not done with a project otherwise the kitchen is tough to use. It’s working for now though.
Our apartment is a loft which means the kitchen, dining and living room are all one space so I keep a lot of my most used craft supplies right across from this island in a wall of cabinets we installed ourselves.
The top half is full of (mostly) pretty things to look at. And then underneath I keep the stuff that I use most often (and things that are safe, sharp things are locked up elsewhere!)
This is probably about 1/4 of my craft stuff. The rest is in the cabinet to the left and in a large locked closet adjacent to O’s room. If you ignore the knitting section it’s actually pretty organized. That’s my sewing machine on the bottom shelf there. I was so excited that it fit and having it easy to access made me use it a lot more.
One of the hardest parts about living in our condo is the light. We have one big wall of windows in this room and we face west. So it can get pretty dark in here except for in the afternoon when it becomes blindingly bright. Anyway, the best photo setup I’ve found thus far (I’m still working on it, my photos have a looooong way to go) is to set up some white foam boards on the couch. I try to do most of my work on the two mornings a week when O is in school. But when he’s home and awake, I often have a curious helper.
The best part of this setup that you’re not seeing (I don’t know why I didn’t get it in the shot) is that that board on the right is being help upright on the other side by a pile of clean laundry, lol! Let’s keep it real, right?!
Like I said before, we do have a small office but I like working in the main part of our house and if I hid myself away, I would miss out on adorableness like this:
Tiny blogger in the making! O often grabs his toy camera or toy laptop and “works” with me! So tell me, where and how do you work?
Don’t forget to take a moment to stop over at the other participating blogs linked up below to see what’s it like behind the scenes for these other awesome bloggers!

I love that you take your photos on your couch. I do all of mine on my daughter’s bed. It’s tricky shooting soup or a drink on an unstable surface, but my kitchen and living room have atrocious light. Gotta get creative, right?

haha! Have you ever spilled? It was so fun seeing how everyone else does it! Thanks for stopping by!

LOVE that you have those cabinets for storing everything! I need to do something like that. All of my food props are stashed away (sort of precariously) in a cabinet under my microwave.
My 2 year old has her own V-Tech laptop and often sits down with mommy to “blog”. lol! 😉

IKEA, Carrie!! We put those up and it completely changed our lives to have so much more storage. They’re holding up pretty well too! O has one of those laptops too, does your daughters make a lot of annoying noise? His does and while cute it drives me completely nuts! 🙂

I love this! I do most of my writing, research and marketing from my couch in the living room. I spend a lot of time on the couch! I do my recipe experimenting in the kitchen of course. I struggle with getting good lighting for my pictures.

Such a cool project! I’m always so anxious about being “perfect” because that’s how other blogs present themselves and my house is far from it (especially because it’s not really “my” house). I’m so glad I’m not the only one who is disorganized behind the scenes! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for stopping by Kyleigh! No one’s perfect, that would be boring! 🙂
