Oh you guys, I think this hat is up there as one of my favorites. I think I’ll always associate chicks with babyhood because someone bought O his very first pair of footie pajamas and they were super soft and covered in little chicks. Baby V wore them too. So they always make me smile.
Plus chicks are a good choice if you’re looking for something gender neutral to make, they work for boys or girls or if you haven’t found out yet!
This easy baby hat knitting pattern is knit in the round and then the adorable eggshell brim is picked up and knit at the end, don’t worry, it’s really easy! It’s adorable in cute sunny yellow and makes the perfect springtime baby hat!

Worsted weight yarn in light yellow, white, orange and charcoal (need my advice on choosing yarn?)
US 7 16″ circular knitting needles

Little Chick Hat Knitting Pattern Instructions
Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles with the yellow yarn color. Join to knit in the round and knit all rows until the hat is about 5 inches long.
Decrease (divide your stitches evenly between 3 double pointed needles or use magic loop):
Round 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 2: knit all stitches
Round 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 4: knit all stitches
Round 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 6: knit all stitches
Round 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Round 8: knit all stitches
Round 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 10-11: knit all stitches
Round 12: (k1, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 13-14: knit all stitches
Round 15: k2tog and repeat to the end of the round
Rounds 16-18: knit all stitches
Cut yarn, thread through loops and pull to close. Weave in ends.
To knit the eggshell brim:
Holding the hat with the cast on edge facing up, (uncurl or block the stockinette edge if it is curling up) pick up 72 stitches with white yarn along the cast on edge with your circular needles and join to knit in the round.
Rounds 1-3: knit all even rounds, purl all odd rounds
Next, to make the pointed peaks, we will work with only 8 stitches at a time. The following rows are knit flat, turning the work after each row. It helps to put the 8 live stitches on double pointed or straight needles.
Rows 1-2: k8
Row 3: k2tog, k4, ssk
Row 4: k6
Row 5: k2tog, k2, ssk
Row 6: k4
Row 7: k2tog, ssk
Row 8: k2tog
Cut yarn and pull through last stitch. Weave in ends. Repeat rows 1-8 with the next 8 stitches.
Bottom Beak (make 1):
Rows 1 – 3: Knit all stitches
Row 4: K2tog, k10, ssk
Row 5: K2tog, k8, ssk
Row 6: K2tog, k6, ssk
Row 7: K2tog, k4, ssk
Row 8: K2tog, k2, ssk
Row 9: K2tog, ssk
Row 10: K2tog (1 stitch remaining)
Cut yarn, pull through loop, weave in this end on back side.
Top Beak (make 1):
Cast on 14 stitches on straight needles
Knit Rows 4 – 10 from Bottom Beak instructions
Cut yarn, pull through loop, weave in this end on back side.
Use the long cast on tail to stitch the bottom beak to the hat, stitch all the way around its edges. Then put the top beak on top and use its long cast on tail to stitch the top beak to the bottom beak and the hat just along its top edge. To make the eyes:
Using a scrap of charcoal yarn on a yarn needle, make a loose stitch for the eye that curves upward in an upside-down ‘U’ shapeThen take three tiny little stitches through that ‘U’ shape and off to the side for the eyelashes. Knot and weave in on the inside of the hat.
