Baseball Baby Hat Knitting Pattern (12 mo. size, see PDF for other sizes)

Gauge: 20 st. = 4 inches

Worsted weight yarn in white and red

US 7 16″ circular knitting needles

US 7 double pointed needles

Yarn needle

Disappearing ink fabric pen

(If you need help, my favorite knitting reference book for everyone from beginners to advanced knitters is THIS ONE!)

Using long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches onto your circular needles with the white yarn color. Join to knit in the round and k1, p1 in a rib stitch for 5 rounds.

Knit all rows until the hat is about 5 inches long.

Decrease:

Round 1: (k6, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Round 3: (k5, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 4: Knit all stitches

Round 5: Knit directly onto 3 of the double pointed needles:

  • Needle 1: (k4, k2tog) repeat two times.
  • Needle 2: (k4, k2tog) repeat two times.
  • Needle 3: (k4, k2tog) repeat one time.

Round 6: Use the fourth double pointed needle to knit all stitches to the end of the round.

Round 7: (k3, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 9: (k2, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 10: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 11: (k1, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 12: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 13: k2tog and repeat to the end of the round.

Cut yarn, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.

To add the stitching:

First draw the shapes of the stitching lines onto the hat with your disappearing ink fabric pen. (For safety, test your pen out on some scrap yarn just to make sure it completely disappears) Take a look at a baseball to see how the stitching lines curve in more than one direction.Baby Baseball Hat Knitting Pattern for your cute little slugger! | littleredwindow.comNext, thread a length of red yarn on your yarn needle and start making one side of each ‘V’ stitch following the lines you drew. Make sure they aren’t too tight or they will pull when the hat stretches. Baby Baseball Hat Knitting Pattern for your cute little slugger! | littleredwindow.comThen go back and stitch the other half of each ‘V’ stitch until you’ve completed all the stitching just like a baseball. Again, don’t stitch too tightly! Follow the instructions on your fabric pen to get rid of your guide marks.
