You know, unfortunately I didn’t have this blog when O was a baby. I was certainly plenty overwhelmed enough as a first time mom so that’s probably a good thing. But the result is a dearth of baby boy projects. I know I’ve been swamping you with girly stuff so I thought I’d at least try to make up for it a little bit. I thought for a while about what would make a cute boy or gender neutral hat to balance the sweet bow hats I recently posted and then I thought, “Ooo, a headphone hat would be so cute!” And they would totally work for boys and girls! I think Baby V looks very rocker chick, right? I did a little googling and was pleased to see that while there are come crochet hats that are similar there wasn’t a good knit equivalent. So here’s what I came up with (and there was definitely a moment in the middle there where I wasn’t quite sure this was going to work so I am quite happy with how it turned out.)

A side note: a woman in the store, while commenting on how cute Baby V is said, “she looks well fed!” Ha! Yes, yes she is…Mmm…wrist rolls!

Knit Baby Headphone Hat (3-6 month size) (see pdf version for other sizes (NEW!))

Circular 16-Inch Knitting Needles, US Size 7

US size 7 double pointed knitting needles

Worsted weight yarn in two colors

yarn needle

(If you need help, my favorite knitting reference book for everyone from beginners to advanced knitters is THIS ONE!)

To make the earflaps:

Using a set of double pointed needles, cast on 6 stitches.

Row 1: kfb, k4, kfb

Row 2: pfb, p6, pfb

Row 3: kfb, k8, kfb

Row 4: pfb, p10, pfb

Row 5: k14

Row 6: p14

Row 7: kfb, k12, kfb

Row 8: p16

Row 9: k16

Row 10: p16

Either leave the stitches on the needle or move to a stitch holder, set aside. Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.comRepeat to make another earflap.

Constructing the headphone hat

Use either a set of double pointed needles or a long circular needle and the magic loop method. I prefer the latter.

Using the long tail method, cast on 18 stitches, then pick up one earflap and knit across its stitches to attach it.Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.comThat’s the earflap on the darker needle to the left… Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com

And here’s the 18 cast-on stitches plus one earflap connected together:Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.comCast on 14 more stitches using the backwards loop method, then pick up the other earflap and knit across its stitches to attach it. You should have 64 stitches on your needles. Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.comAt this point you need to join your stitches to work in the round. Do this by either distributing the stitches evenly across 3 double pointed needles (if they aren’t already) or using the magic loop method.

Rounds 1-5: p2, k2, for 18 stitches, k16 across the first earflap, p2, k2, for 14 stitches, k16 across the other earflap.

Knit all stitches until the hat is about 4 1/2 inches long (from the brim, not from the earflaps)

Decrease:

Round 1: Knit 6, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Round 3: Knit 5, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 4: Knit all stitches

Round 5: Knit directly onto 3 of the double pointed needles:

  • Needle 1: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two times.
  • Needle 2: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two times.
  • Needle 3: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat one time.

Round 6: Use the fourth double pointed needle to knit all stitches to the end of the round.

Round 7: Knit 3 stitches, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 9: Knit 2 stitches, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 10: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 11: Knit 1 stitch, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 12: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 13: Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Cut your yarn, thread it onto a yarn needle, put it through the remaining stitches and pull to close. Weave in any loose ends.

To make the headphones

Ok, so to be clear, when it comes off the needles and the edges curl up a little this kinda looks like a hexagon-ish shape but you can massage and stretch it as you sew it to the hat OR block it first so it looks more like a circle. Do don’t freak out if it comes off the needles not looking circular enough.

Using double pointed needles, cast on 36 stitches (leave a long tail of extra yarn to sew the earphone piece to the hat) and distribute among 3 needles. Join to knit in the round. (or use the magic loop method again)

Round 1: knit all stitches

Round 2: (k4, k2tog) repeat to end of round

Round 3: (k3, k2tog) repeat to end of round

Round 4: (k2, k2tog) repeat to end of round

Round 5: (k1, k2tog) repeat to end of round

Round 6: k2tog, repeat to end of round

Cut your yarn, thread on a yarn needle, thread through remaining stitches and pull to close. Weave in that loose end on the back side. Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.comRepeat to make a second earphone piece.

Using the long cast-on tails, stitch the earphones to the earflaps of the headphone hat.  If the earflaps curl up too much for you, you might consider blocking the hat before this step. Bind off and leave a long tail to stitch the strap. Weave in the loose end from the cast on edge. Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.comUse the long tail from the bind off end to stitch the headphone strap to the hat from one earphone, over the top of the hat, to the other.  Weave in any remaining loose ends.

To make the headphone cord/hat straps, cut 3 pieces of yarn each 12″ long. Thread all three through the bottom of the earphones on the hat and pull them through halfway to the other side.Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com Knit Baby Headphone Hat free knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com

Divide the yarn into 3 sets of 2 strands each and braid until you are about 1 inch from the bottom. 1. According to the picture the hat about the ribbed band is knit one row purl one row for the smooth look like the ear flaps but the instructions say to knit all stitches until the hat measures 41/2 inches, is this a mistake?

    1. nope, it’s not a mistake. After you add in the earflaps you join to knit the rest of the hat in the round, so you will in fact be knitting all stitches from them on to get stockinette. Make sense? 🙂 Happy knitting!
