Let these tough superhero bookends use their super strength to hold up your books!

You guys! These superhero bookends turned out so cute! I had them in my mind for a looong time. I had originally planned to make them an entirely different way but I couldn’t find the supplies I needed without it being expensive. And that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I love these so much. O hasn’t come home from school yet but he is going flip because he is a major superhero fanatic. Although I will say we had to “take a break” from superheroes for a little bit due to some, um, less than calm behavior. And we definitely don’t do superhero play on playdates anymore due to some “flying practice” incidents (not dangerous just too loud and crazy). Anyway, I made these bookends, completely oblivious to the outside world, and then showed them to my husband who said, “Oh, that’s cool! It’s good timing there’s that Superman vs. Batman movie coming out soon, these are perfect!” Um, yeah, I totally planned that. Sure…  (I don’t want to get sued though so let me point out that I have actually made a “very strong superhero” and a “nocturnal superhero” they’re definitely not Superman and Batman. Right?) Anyway, these are going to look so cute (I’m sorry, I mean tough, they’re going to look super tough) on O’s shelf! Here’s how I did it:

Metal bookends (I actually think these would work better than the ones I used)

Black foam board

Craft knife with extra blades

Hot glue gun

Superhero template

1. Take a look at your bookends. I found that mine didn’t have anything grippy on the bottoms so they were slipping on the shelf. So I ran a squiggly line of hot glue along the bottom edges to keep it from sliding around. DIY Superhero Bookends for the comic book lover in your life! | littleredwindow.com

2. Print out one copy of the superhero template (click on the link to open the image in another window and print the jpg). When I did this, I drew the superheroes myself after looking at a bunch of images online and creating my own mishmash. Then I scanned them and scaled them in photoshop to create this template. Obviously this template is for personal use only.

Then tape the drawing to a piece of black foam board. It’s easiest to use two of the precut straight edges to align it. My tips for cutting foam board are:

  • go sloooowly
  • change knife blades frequently (I used 2 for each superhero shape)
  • Don’t attempt to cut all the way through the foam in one pass, go over each cut at least three times to get through the entire depth.
  • Don’t try to cut the curves in one pass, it can be easier to kind of carve away parts like this DIY Superhero Bookends for the comic book lover in your life! | littleredwindow.com
  • If you are having trouble getting all the way through, especially at corners, turn the foam board over to the back and connect the cut lines there. DIY Superhero Bookends for the comic book lover in your life! | littleredwindow.com
  • Go back at the end and trim up any corners or rough edges with a brand new blade.
