My mom was cleaning recently and found my piggy bank in one of their closets. She texted a picture and I remembered how much I loved that thing! He’s a sweet little blushing pig with closed eyes, a shy smile and an inexplicable pink and white striped sweater. And the crazy thing is, it’s an old school ceramic piggy bank, you know, the kind that doesn’t have a  cork or anything in the bottom. And do you know what that means?!?! It means there’s no way to get the money out without breaking it. And by it I mean him because my piggy bank was the cutest little guy ever and I considered him a person. Unfortunately he is also full of pennies so he weighs a ton. I’m sure the combined total is less than $5 but still it’s a tough choice! Anyway, all joking aside, his sweet face inspired this adorably little pig hat for baby V complete with sweet sleepy eyes. I think it turned out just so darn cute! Worsted weight yarn in Dusty Rose (light pink) and Charcoal

US 7 16″ circular knitting needles

US 7 double pointed needles

Yarn needles

(If you need help, my favorite knitting reference book for everyone from beginners to advanced knitters is THIS ONE!)

Using long-tail cast on, cast on 64 stitches onto your circular needles with the pink yarn color. Join to knit in the round and knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch in a rib stitch for 5 rounds.

Knit until the hat is about 4 1/2 inches long.

Decrease:

Round 1: Knit 6, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Round 3: Knit 5, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 4: Knit all stitches

Round 5: Knit directly onto 3 of the double pointed needles:

  • Needle 1: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two times.
  • Needle 2: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two times.
  • Needle 3: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat one time.

Round 6: Knit all stitches to the end of the round.

Round 7: Knit 3 stitches, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 9: Knit 2 stitches, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 10: Knit 1 stitch, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 11: Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Cut yarn, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.

To knit the pig ears (make 4):

Using your double pointeds as straight needles, cast on 11 stitches. Leave a long tail to stitch the ears to the hat.

Row 1: purl all stitches

Rows 2-7: knit even rows, purl odd rows

Row 8: k2tog, k7, ssk

Row 9: p2tog, p5, p2tog

Row 10: k2tog, k3, ssk

Row 11: purl all stitches

Row 12: k2tog, k1, ssk

Row 13: purl all stitches

Row 14: k3tog, cut yarn and pull the end through the loop, weave in that end.

To assemble the ears:

Hold two ears wrong sides (purl sides) together and use one of the cast on tails to carefully stitch them together around the edges. Then use the other cast on tail to securely stitch the ear to the hat.

To make the snout:

Using your double pointeds as straight needles, cast on 4 stitches. Leave a long tail to stitch the snout to the hat.

Row 1: kfb 4 times

Row 2: purl all stitches

Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb

Row 4 – 8: purl even rows, knit odd rows

Row 9: k2tog, k6, ssk

Row 10: purl all stitches

Row 11: k2tog, k2tog, ssk, ssk

Bind off and weave in end.

Use the long cast on tail to stitch the snout to the hat.

To add the nostrils and eyes:

Using a yarn needle and the charcoal yarn stitch two long vertical stitches for the nostrils. Then to make each eye, make a long horizontal stitch but leave it loose so it can curve downward. Then stitch through that yarn and outward to make the eyelashes and hold that curve in place. (I’m sorry, that second picture is kind of creepy, I promise, no pigs were harmed in the making of this tutorial!)This Little Pig Hat with free printable knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com This Little Pig Hat with free printable knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com This Little Pig Hat with free printable knitting pattern! | littleredwindow.com

  1. Hi….I clicked on this because I was interested in what was discribed as a free pattern…after getting a total runaround, I find that I must buy the kit….which I neither need nor want….what’s the story?

  2. Thanks for this pattern – it’s absolutely adorable and really easy to make. I’m not an expert knitter but I’ve been knitting for years on/off and I really enjoyed this one & the cat/lamb hats xx
