Well guys, baby V just hit 7 months old! I know people are always going on and on about how fast it goes but it really is true, especially for the second one. I feel like she just came home! Anyway, little miss is a petite 13th percentile although she has plenty of chub and is growing fine, she’s just little. Which is weird for us because O was always in the high 90’s. Maybe it’s related but she’s still up at least once during the night. Kind of annoying but I can still function on that amount of sleep, I just usually have trouble going back to sleep because my mind gets going while I’m nursing her and it’s sometimes tough to turn it back off. Anyway, it was during one of these 4 am sessions that I got the idea for this cute hat. A sweet rainbow in a blue sky with white fluffy clouds! Because if you can’t wear a ridiculous hat when you’re a baby, when can you? I knit it up this weekend and I think it turned out really cute and happy.  And due to popular demand, there is also a printable version, so click the link below if you prefer to print patterns out. Here’s how to make this adorable baby hat!

Worsted weight yarn in light blue and six rainbow colors (I bought this rainbow pack )

Bernat Pipsqueak Yarn in white (or similar eyelash or chenille yarn)

US 6 16″ circular knitting needles

US 7 16″ circular knitting needles

US 7 Double pointed knitting needles

Yarn needle

(If you need help, my favorite knitting reference book for everyone from beginners to advanced knitters is THIS ONE!)

Note: I did have some trouble with the white brim on my hat wanting to flip up. I’ve adjusted the pattern to use smaller needles for that part and that should help. If you still have problems you could either block your hat or consider leaving the white brim off at the beginning and adding it at the end as a crochet trim. (Or just let it flip up, it still looks just as cute!)

Using long-tail cast on and the US 6 circular needles, cast on 64 stitches with the white fluffy yarn. Join to knit in the round and knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches in a rib stitch for 3 rounds. Switch to the light blue yarn and the US 7 circular needles and then knit all stitches for 10 rounds.

Switch to the pink or red yarn and knit all stitches for 4 rounds. Then switch to orange and knit 4 rounds, yellow for 4 rounds, green for 4 rounds, dark blue for 4 rounds and finally, purple for 2 rounds.

Continuing on with the purple yarn, begin your decrease.

Decrease:

Round 1: Knit 6, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Switch back to light blue yarn.

Round 3: Knit 5, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 4: Knit all stitches

Round 5: Knit directly onto 3 of the double pointed needles:

  • Needle 1: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two more times.
  • Needle 2: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two more times.
  • Needle 3: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat one more time.

Round 6: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Pom Pom Cloud:

Finally, you will want to add a pom pom made with the fluffy white yarn. If you have a Pom pom maker that would be great. If you do not, here’s how I make mine by hand:

Wind the yarn around two fingers or a 1 1/2 inch piece of stiff cardboard about 30 times.

Then use another long piece of yarn to tie the bundle around the middle and knot tightly.

Use sharp scissors to cut the loops on either side of the tie to release the pom pom. Then use the scissors to trim the ends to make your pom pom nice and round and even.

If you want to see pictures of me doing this, click here!

Use the tail of the yarn you tied around the middle to securely sew the pom pom to the top of the hat!
