This adorable and super easy basic garter stitch hat knitting pattern includes instructions to knit it either flat or in the round for anyone from baby to kid to adult!
I design a lot of unique, interesting or even weird knitting patterns but no matter what I’m designing, my number one priority is that the pattern is well written and SUPER easy to understand. No one likes a confusing knitting pattern.
My Back to Basics knitting pattern series is a set of simple, basic and easy to understand knitting patterns that have been tried and tested by tons of my readers so you know they’re going to work. As I expanded to include adult sizing in my hat knitting patterns, I realized a few things were missing from this series.
One of those missing patterns was a basic garter stitch hat. How could I not think to knit that?
And as I was designing and testing a basic garter stitch hat knitting pattern I decided that I would include instructions to knit this garter hat either flat or in the round. After asking for extra larger sizes, that is your number on request because many people don’t love knitting in the round, especially with double pointed knitting needles.
So I’m going to give you both! This easy hat knitting pattern is knit flat with straight knitting needles OR knit in the round with circular knitting needles and double pointed knitting needles. This garter stitch hat uses worsted weight yarn. My sample is knit in hand-dyed Malabrigo worsted and it’s amazing. Aren’t those colors pretty?

Basic Garter Stitch Hat Knitting Pattern
Sizes included: 0-3 months, (6 months, 1-2 years, 3-6 years, Child Large/Adult Small, Adult Large) Read our sizing guidelines post for more information.
Gauge: 19 stitches = 4 inches
- Worsted weight yarn
- US 7 (4.5 mm) 16″ circular knitting needles
- US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles
- Yarn needle
