I know for a while vinyl word wall art was all the rage. I still love a cute little vinyl “hello” on the front door or something but now I’m seeing a ton of word wall art made of wood. So it’s 3 dimensional and you can paint it or finish it any way you want. I think that’s super cool. There are some really talented people making them. That being said, what I am not such a fan of, is the price. ( I get it, it’s labor intensive!) So I wanted to make my own but for much much cheaper. And you guys, it turned out SO cute! I originally intended this to go in our bedroom which, in a fashion I’m sure a lot of you can relate to, is the last room to get any decorating attention in the entire house. Partly because we’re being indecisive, and partly because hardly anyone ever sees it so it doesn’t seem so urgent. In fact, we’ve had the same super ugly curtains up for almost two years that came with the house! But then my word wall art was so cute, I decided to put it up in baby V’s room instead. But be assured, this is definitely not a nursery specific project! Want to know the secret? Read on!

Next you have a choice, you can either tape the text to the foam board and cut it out all together, or you can transfer the drawing to the foam board which is probably easier. If you do that, simply draw all over the back of the artwork with the side of a pencil, lay it on the foam board and then trace over the edges of the letters, that will transfer the lines. Then start cutting. I carve away small pieces a little at a time, it’s tough to cut long lines in a thick material like this. If you have trouble getting the pieces that you’ve cut, off, turn the foam board over to the back and check the corners of your cut lines, sometimes you won’t make it all the way through the paper backing and you can fix that from the back. I used 4 blades while cutting this out. Also, be very very gentle with this, it is delicate at some of the smaller connection points. If you do break it, don’t panic, you can add some tape to the back!

7. When you’re done cutting, clean up any rough edges and then take it outside for several thin and even coats of spray paint. Make sure to get it from all angles to get all of the edges.

I used some 3M command strips and it’s very very secure. And that’s it, enjoy your super cheap Giant Word Wall Art! (Psst! Heart and star wall decals are from Urban Walls!)

  1. How did you get the lettering please? What font have you used as I would like to do this with other wording as well. I love what you create, you are so clever.

    1. Hi!
In step 1 of the instructions are 3 files to download and print and when you tape the pages together it is the template for the lettering! Super easy! I will have to look up what font it is tomorrow if you want to do other words. I can’t find that on my phone. Thanks so much for your kind words!
