Apple Hat Knitting Pattern (6 mo. size)

Gauge: 20 st. = 4 inches

You need:

Worsted weight yarn in red and green

US size 7 16 inch circular needles

set of US size 7 double pointed needles

yarn needle

(If you need help, my favorite knitting reference book for everyone from beginners to advanced knitters is THIS ONE!)

Using long-tail cast on, cast on 64 stitches onto your circular needles with the red yarn color. Join to knit in the round and knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches in a rib stitch for 5 rounds. Knit all stitches until the hat is about 4 1/2 inches long.

(If you prefer a rolled brim, cast on and knit all stitches until the hat is 5 inches long instead of 4 1/2)

Decrease:

Round 1: Knit 6, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Round 3: Knit 5, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 4: Knit all stitches

Round 5: Knit directly onto 3 of the double pointed needles:

  • Needle 1: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat one time.
  • Needle 2: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat two times.
  • Needle 3: Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together, repeat one time.

Round 6: Knit all stitches to the end of the round.

Round 7: Knit 3 stitches, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 9: Knit 2 stitches, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 10: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 11: Knit 1 stitch, Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 12: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 13: Knit 2 stitches together and repeat to the end of the round. (8 stitches remaining)

Stem:

Switch to green yarn and knit in the round until the stem is 2 inches long. Cut your yarn, thread it onto a needle and thread it through the remaining stitches, pull to close. Weave in your ends.

Leaf (make 2):

On double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches with green yarn

Row 1: Kfb, k1, kfb

Row 2: purl across

Row 3:Kfb, k3, kfb

Row 4: purl across

Row 5: Kfb, k5, kfb

Row 6: purl across

Row 7: Kfb, k7, kfb

Row 8: purl across

Row 9: K2tog, k7, ssk

Row 10: purl across

Row 11: K2tog, k5, ssk

Row 12: purl across

Row 13: K2tog, k3, ssk

Row 14: purl across

Row 15:  K2tog, k1, ssk

Row 16: Bind off, cut yarn and pull the tail through the last stitch to end.

Now you have one half of one leaf. Repeat 1 more time until you have 2 leaves.

Take the two leaves and put them right (knit) sides together and use one of the tails to whipstitch them together along all sides, leaving an edge open at one point for turning.

Turn the leaf inside out, and stitch it to the hat securely at the base of the stem using the cast on tail.
