Lucky for me I have another guinea pig, right? In fact, this must be why people have second children…when the first one gets too old to dress up all cute and silly, you need another one? I’m kidding (not really) but anyway, last year, Baby V just wore a pumpkin hat because she was brand new and we were all exhausted, but this year, I wanted her to have a real costume. And this is my favorite kind for little kids, the kind that starts with warm cozy pajamas as the base. Not only does that make it easier but then you know they’re going to be comfortable too. Here’s how I did it!

Green footie pajamas

Purple (or flower petal color of your choice), green, yellow and black felt

Hot glue gun

Needle and thread (optional)

Elastic baby headbandyarn to make your own or blank barrette

Ok, so I want to start with a little disclaimer. I am a total cheapskate. And I totally balked at buying baby clothes that will only be worn once. Perhaps if I had found cheaper footie pajamas (that also had free fast shipping), but I didn’t. So I sewed all of the costume parts together so that I can clip the threads and take the felt off after Halloween and Baby V can wear them as regular pajamas. If you don’t mind or find cheaper pajamas to sacrifice, by all means, HOT GLUE it all! No one gets any awards for fancy-ness of assembly for Halloween costumes! hee hee.

  1. Lay out your footie pajamas and cut a thin length of felt that is the same length as the circumference of the neckline. Then cut petal shapes like this out of two colors of felt, make one set slightly smaller than the other. Make sure that the petals will fit around the neckline of the pajamas without being too far apart or too squished.  Layer the two sizes of each petal together with a little hot glue along the top to hold them in place.  DIY Flower Costume and Bee Headband, so perfect for Halloween! | littleredwindow.com DIY Flower Costume and Bee Headband, so perfect for Halloween! | littleredwindow.com DIY Flower Costume and Bee Headband, so perfect for Halloween! | littleredwindow.com3. When you have enough petals, hot glue them to the neckline strip.

If you decide to add a stem, cut a strip of green felt and sew or glue it down the snap or zipper front of the pajamas. I actually used two colors of green layered just for fun. Then I added a few simple leaves on either side of the stem. The stem and the leaves will be much cuter on a baby that walks, they’re hard to see on one that only sits and crawls…DIY Flower Costume and Bee Headband, so perfect for Halloween! | littleredwindow.com8. To make the Bee Headband, I first started by knitting up a super quick knit headband from my Knit Bow Baby Headbands post (leave off the bow). You can also definitely make one out of elastic or purchase a premade one. I chose to make Baby V’s tan but you can pick any color you want, it could be green, or the same color as the petals of your flower, anything would be cute! (Note: if your little one has enough hair, you could totally make this a bee barette, that would be so cute!)

They are both about 7 inches long and the yellow is about 1 1/4 inches wide at the wide end of the triangle while the black is just a little bit wider, about 1 1/2 inches wide at the wide end. Layer the black felt on top of the yellow, and start rolling them up from the wide end of the triangle, securing with hot glue as you go. Cut a pair of black wings in a figure eight shape and hot glue them to the top of the bee. Attach the bee to the headband. Please keep in mind that this little bee could be a choking hazard so do not leave baby unattended with it. I chose to sew mine to the headband to make it as secure as possible but however you attach it, use common sense and make sure it’s safe!
